Should burning take this long?

I'm new to burning, just started last night. Started burning 4.5GB of videos I downloaded to dvd+r disc (holds 4.7) and the process is still going. What is a good free burning program to use?

amd athlon 64 2400+
1024MB memory
NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner
40GB quantum fireball hd (pretty old hd, not sure if this would hurt the burning process too much)

It takes me around 15-30 minutes with an 8X DVD-R to burn a 4.7GB DVD

It appears your DVD Recorder has hung. Restart the burn process with a new DVD. Trash the current one.

I use Nero Express .

It must be re-encoding the video, with an old slow hard drive and a slow CPU it could take a while, but still shouldn't take that long..make sure your hard drive and DVD burner aren't stuck in PIO mode. What CPU do you actualy have? There is no such thing as an Athlon 64 2400+, did you mean athlon XP, or did you mean A64 3400+?

Ok, new problem.

This dvd+r disc i burned works fine in my dvd rom drive, doesn't work in my dvd player. what is the problem? 🙁

Can you list your recent system specs?

Is there anything else running on the same channel?

How old is the motherboard?

How long inbetween reinstallation of Winblows?

1. I assume you closed the the disc 😉

2. Does your DVD player support DVD +R playback? As long as the player is not super-old, it should not be a problem; my old DVD player would not play them though so it is worth a check.

i'm guessing my dvd player doesn't support it.

this is getting on my nerves, now i can't even burn another dvd.

I'm getting a "one or more files could not be copied to compilation" message.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? I am using nero burning rom 7, I want to copy media from my hard drive to a blank dvd, I have dvd-video selected in the burning rom.

You can't just put movie files on to the DVD and expect a DVD player to play it. They need to be converted to a DVD format - which will take a long time - and you won't be able to get too many hours of video on a DVD either.

Try burning them as a DVD ROM. You won't be able to add any more files later but it does make DVD R+ more compatible.

Then again it could be that the player doesn't like the media in question, or it might not ever be able to handle R+.
