Should burning or desecration of the US flag be illegal?

yes it should be illegal, it shows lack of respect for the country as an entity, and a lack of respect for those who fought for it.

Yes. Shows a lack of appreciation and respect for those who fought and died for this country to make it what it is today. If you don't like America, GTFO, but don't burn our primary symbol of freedom.

yea, and those people are idiots. But it still doesn't mean it should be illegal. If letting the KKK march the streets is considered free speech, then so should burning the flag.

No it shouldn't, people should be allowed to express themselves how they wish as long as it doesn't hurt others. This is a free country after all.

No. but if you make the news for doing so, don't expect good service the next time you eat at a good ol' american eatery.

No. It's a form of free expression, and as it doesn't directly harm anyone, it should be allowed...as disrespectful and/or unpleasant as it may be.

Why? It's a freakin' flag. It's symbolic, and burning it doesn't hurt anyone. Y'know, unless you use it to set someone on fire or something. Then it's bad.

There are plenty worse acts that should be illegal but aren't. Flag burning is just an exercise in inflammatory political masturbation, and if anything is a great way to spot the loonies from the sane folks.

Free speech, either you have it or you don't, there can't be any room for exceptions. Soldiers fought for a constitution, a country, an ideal, not a flag. If you think otherwise you're giving them a disservice. I think people who burn flags are morons, and I think they should make flags explosive just for that reason. They have the freedom to do it though, which IS something that our troops fought for. To deny that right is disrespectful to those who fought for it.

Don't get caught up in silly symbolism, have some real patriotism and the ability to question why.

Yes, it should be illegal, so we can join the ranks of other countries that ban the burning of their national flag, like China, North Korea, Cuba, Iran and Iraq.

As much as I don't agree with burning the flag...

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

me and some friends just kind of discussed this recently:
too many freedoms has paved way for the problems we face as a country. no other country is as lax as we are, and rightfully so. they have gone through their power-hungry days, and now with their own democracy, that still isn't as free as ours, the people live great lives. our country has the highest crime rates, most drunk driving and things along those lines.. all because the punishment is almost like a slap on the rist. Serving a mere few years for killing someone while behind the wheel drunk is insanely stupid, other countries your usually lucky to see light of day outside of a jail cell.
freedoms are nice, but they give room for people to abuse them.

so... we should let people destroy the Status of Libery if they ever so pleased, and not be punished?
there is a fine line between free speech and treachory against the state. symbols are much more than symbols. symbolism is powerful and destroying a symbol is equal to destroying the meaning of a symbol.
people believe in different methods of free speech. i happen to not believe that burning a flag is free speech, and rather is treachory. destroying the symbols that mean what our country stands for is every right an attack on what our country stands for.

but i'll rephrase my believe: i don't necessarily believe it should be against the law, because many people view free speech differently and that law would could an uproar.. but it is highly offendable and people shouldn't be so lax on the idea of flag burning.

but please, respond to the idea of destroying the statue of liberty.

That's strange.....I thought they died so it could continue waving.

And it would be disrespectful to those who fought and died for our freedoms, to selectively take them away.
