Should Band of Brothers be shown to students?

Last night I watched the final 4 episodes of Band of Brothers and I was completely blown away. Not only do I respect the people that fought in world war 2 more after watching the series, but I believe I now have a small understanding at what the face of war looks like.

After thinking about it all of last night and for the better part of today, I feel it would be great for high school students to watch this movie in their history class as part of a world war 2 course. BoB really does a good job bringing portraying what happened in WW2 and just what the soldiers went through.

Would BoB be too graphic for students, say 16-17 years old? In today's (mostly) peaceful times, I feel the students would get an understanding at what war really means and what it looks like.

What do you think? I've thought about taking the series to a local history teacher here in my community but wanted to get your opinions first.

It's fine. Schools tend to show things like that and cover their butt by having the parents sign a permission slip due to the rating (Which students promptly forge)

The series is definitely too long to simply get a point across to someone. Those who are disintersted in that sort of theme will find it painfully boring to sit through, and their retention rate will diminish with each episode. T

But if it was part of a history course, like a world war 2 course.

I think kids would rather watch a movie and then discuss it, then have a lecture on world war 2 for 2-3 weeks.

I've never seen BoB. I see it at Blockbuster and have thought about picking it up, but I keep hearing about how graphic it is but I've never heard anything about how good it is. Take away the b&g and is it worth watching? Compared to SPR, how is it?

Band of Brothers is much like Saving Private Ryan....but sooo much better, imho.

You get very, very attached to everyone in BoB...more then I ever have in any other movie I've seen. When the fighting starts I would get nervous that someone would get killed, and then when it happened it was such a shock and I felt devestated.

After the movie ended I just sat their letting everything sink in while the tears were running down my face.

It's an awesome movie.

Spielberg gets too much credit for his WWII sh!t. Combat! was a WWII TV show and there are so many better WWII movies than SPR.

I have to disagree with you on this. I've seen almost every movie made about WW2. SPR is by far the most realistic movie made on the subject.

BoB is a great series that everyone should see.

Definatly not, any movie is 10x better than a lecture to any HS student.

First time it was on TV I switched it over because Ross from Friends was acting in it. I mean it just didn't make any sense seeing Ross in a war programme, maybe I should have watched it then, now its just too late to start watching it half way through the series.

No,

I'm a huge fan of Band of Brothers, but it's all these fanatics that are making it fscking lame. Stop trying to make a religion around BoB and leave it as is.

BoB = good
BoB cultists = makes my butt itch.

I think students should watch band of brothers -and- thin red line for WWII, as well as some historic documentary content.

For Vietnam, I think Platoon is fair shake.

My grandfather fought in WWII and was a Army Ranger batallion that fought up through Italy, through Switzerland, and through southern Germany into Berlin itself. He won't talk about it to anyone...my grandpa's brother fought in the Pacific and apparently they recounted their story to one another after the war. My great uncle told me that my grandpa lost over 3/4 of his friends from his company in the war and watched some them die in some pretty grotesque ways.

I don't think you should watch entertaining movies in school. It's supposed to be a torturously boring time.

But seriously, dedicating 10 days or so to Band of Brothers is too much.

That's kinda the same thing with my dad. He was in the Korean War. Every now and then he mentions something about it, nothing major like combat but things like how cold it was, some of the guys he knew and where he was. Eventhough I've never asked him about what it was like, I can just tell that from what little he speaks of it, he doesn't want to talk about it. Also my unlce was in Vietnam and he has shell shock from it. I know they both lost a lot of friends in the wars they were in and saw some really awful things, I can't even begin to imagine how they are/were able to cope with it.

Ha! "We Were Soldiers" would be my choice for a Vietnam movie. It's one of the very few that doesn't have some liberal slant to it.
