Should Apple make more consumer electronics?

Since my 2+ year old iPod continues my favorite electronic device I can't help but think of what Apple could do if they apply their design principles and user friendly interfaces to more products... Wouldn't an Apple made PDA with 10 gigs rock (that's just slightly bigger than the iPod)? Imagine what a cellphone designed by apple would look like? While people may have qualms with their software I have to say that their hardware is universally well designed and functional (well, other than the one-button mouse!)... Would anyone else like to see the apple logo on products other than computers?

I'd love to see more "consumer" products by APPL freedomsbeat212, but as a stockholder, I don't think now is the time IMO.

On a similar note (consumer electronics) where do you think Gateway will be in 10 years? Will they even sell PC's, or will it be HDTV's and the other products they area braching in to?

Gateway seems to be trying very hard to enter the HTPC market... I think that's a very hard market to penetrate simply because the market doesn't really exist... Very few people want to integrate their PC with their TV in my opinion.. They have a whole slew of HTPC products coming out very soon.. I like their DIVX/DVD/network player but think that it's more of a niche item than something that will make them a more profitable company..

Wasn't the Newton the first real PDA, period?

IIRC first production model yes, successful no :(

It was also a brick. I agree though, an Apple cell phone or PDA (or even a combo unit...:D) would be cool.

I wonder why no one has thought about a PDA based off of the tiny toshiba hd's that power the iPods... I'm sure it'll cost a pretty penny but I'm positive that a market exists for a high storage palm sized computer.

I agree. It seems that their Plasma TV venture is going pretty well - when I worked for them in April (before the bastards laid me off and closed my country store!!!!! :| ), there was a 3 months wait to get one of the Plasma TVs, and now they're branching out into even bigger/better plasmas).

you know, if apple made a cell phone, it would probably only be able to call about 10% of the phone numbers. the rest would be incompatible...just kidding, i'm actually not a mac hater :D

i think i read somewhere once that apple got pretty far into the design of a video game system (along the same lines as the atari, at about the same time) before they scrapped the idea. can anyone confirm/deny this?

funny thing is, the newton is still used today and can play mp3s and such :)

and yea, it would be nice to have their designers working on other things... like computer cases for wintel users :) but... i have a feeling it will cost an arm and a leg...

I'll pass on the geek-chic, black-turtleneck marketing. Apple's products are ridiculously overpriced. It seems that they still haven't figured out what they are - an OS manufacturer, a computer company, or some gadget manufacturer. Remember that piece of "Technological wizardry" known as the Cube? Pulled in just over a year. Ha.

I first read that as "Should Apple make consumer electronics?" and I chuckled a little. I suppose it'd be nice but expensive probably.
