Should AOL users be allowed to post? w/ *poll*

I have a friend or two that are quite on the level..and are home right now from college and are stuck using AOL that would probably want to post here if they were allowed, but of course aren't.

My suggestion would just be to ban AOL registrations..but once they're registered, people like me and others should be allowed to post, since sometimes there is no alternative. And that would easily solve the problem that was experienced last time.

Why should 20-30 million people be punished for the actions of a few?

What do you think?

---

Long version:

AOL is banned from AnandTech as BOTH an email address and as an ISP. This means that, regardless of your registered email address, you cannot post on AnandTech while you are logged onto AOL.

This action was necessary because, awhile back, we came under constant attack from a very nasty troll who uses AOL as his base. His idea of fun was to challenge the moderators to see how far he could go in vandalizing our forums. When he was banned, he would just register again under another name and continue his activities and then brag about it on other forums.

Unlike every other major ISP we have dealt with under similar circumstances, AOL repeatedly refused to give us appropriate technical assistance to stop him. Our moderators are unpaid volunteers, and we simply do not have time to deal with irresponsible ISP's such as AOL.

The sad result is that, if you wish to post on AnandTech, it will have to be with another email provider AND from another, hopefully more responsible ISP. You can do this and still keep your AOL membership. AOL has a program that allows you to do so for around $10 per month, AS LONG AS you use another dial-up provider for your ISP.

---

Short version:

It ain't gonna happen.

Shorter version:

No.

They weren't banned cuz we hate them. (Although we do.) They were banned because people were signing up different accounts through the AOL ISP, and trolling these forums like crazy.

AOL sucks. There's no reason why ANYONE should be using it. I don't care if these people's parents use AOL - it indicates the stupidity of the entire family. KEEP THEM BANNED!

;)

Right, because everyone who posts from a non-AOL ISP is a Rhodes scholar

I seriously don't see the intelligence of the forums going down too much from what it is now by allowing AOL users in.

regardless of what people here think, if the ownders around here have seen that AOL is used for spamming, thats a good enough reason for a ban. this is not a world-owned forum.

EDIT: why do your friends HAVE to use AOL?

Maybe if each AOLer posts a $1,000 bond with an approved escrow service, forfeited if they spam or troll :)

With your suggestion the troll could just sign up for a freebee isp account or borrow a friends or something to register and then logon via aol and still be a nuisance.

Plus, it's more work for mods to ban by IP Range and then allow some trusted in, than to just blanket out AOL all together.

Plus this has been covered before and it's not our decision to make.

How is it ANY different to sign up for a freebee isp account and nef from there?

I still see no reason at all why, if I have access to nothing else I can't just sign on to AOL and post from there.

No, but not because of the users -- it's because of AOL itself.

AFAIK, most of the public proxies are banned from posting for that exact reason. People were smart enough to do it, getting around the Mods's bans and trolling like mofos.
