Should AMD use the name Hammer when it's released?

In a nutshell, AMD's new processor due out at the end of the year is codenamed Hammer but AMD is gonna change that to an actual name before then. What do you think it should be? I think they should call it "AMD Kick@$$". Short, and to the point.

I like "Your kid is probably a hacker if he wants this"

Kind of a long name for a processor, but I like it.

I'd say it doesn't matter as long as is performs up to expectations. But I can see the marketing problem - imagine trying to trademark the name Hammer.
AMD to the trademark office: "Yes, sir, we invented the word Hammer and it isn't used in any other product."

It just isn't an easy battle. It is just like Windows which may lose its trademark on Windows (a spin off of the Lindows lawsuit). The word "window" has been around a lot longer than Microsoft.

They just need something that people can remember and isn't used in any other product on the market.

And if they can't trademark "Hammer" but use it anyways, then any company can sell a Hammer processor. Imagine the confusion: "Mommy, what is this Cyrix stamp on my Hammer processor?"

YES. Athlon, Pentium, Duron... All nice bland names.... But Clawhammer and Sledgehammer. Those names are just SOOOO cool! Espesially Clawhammer!

But, in the end, they could call it "George", all I care is the performance.

I bet they will keep the "Athlon" brand name.

"Athlon Extreme", "Athlon Ultra", "Athlon-64", or somesuch.

How about Athlon II?

There might be some confusion between 'AMD Hammer' and 'AMG Hammer'.

They should use a name using the fact that it is their eigth generation processor, because people pick up on names like that. If not, call it the GolathForce Crusher ClawHammer Ultra Turbo II+

I like FUD DUD.

Show me the silicon! Until then, don't tell me this, that, blah, blah, blah..

We had AMD training today, and while most of it is under NDA, but the release date is close to what is rumored, but it's going to be VERY expensive, and require a new, unproven mainboard platform.. I berated the AMD engineer and rep because they weren't controlling the spin on this CPU, and it's killing XP sales..

I would expect them to use a variation of the Athlon name.

What about 8x86? Go back to tradition...

I would personally like them to use Hammer, then the ClawHammer and SledgeHammer because them are soooo cool, but I guess that ain't gonna happen.

<< Intel killer? >>

Or how about "Baby Killer." That would create a ton of buzz. "That new processor is so powerfull it will kill your children"
Anything is better than "XP."

For a sales name, Hammer sounds too generic - it sounds like what it is, a codename. Although they kept K5 and K6, K6-2, and K6-3 (which stood for pentium Killer, I think), they started renaming procs for market with the K7 (Athlon).
