Should all males serve manadatory time in the military?

Interested in hearing your thoughts...As a Vet, I can say that the military was beneficial for me and numerous others at a pivotal point in our lives, that point where we needed discipline, organization, and an understanding that the world did not revolve around us or our egos.

I know tons of guys who have served that went in as self-absorbed dolts (like me) and came out productive and better prepared for the world. Despite the current crises, the military offers opportunity that no other job can or will.

Aight...I'll stop here as I am beginning to sound like a recruiter. Nonetheless, your coherent thoughts would be appreciated.

and....Merry Christmas!

I'm not gonna say yes or no. While there are many people who could benefit from it (punks, washouts, 'gangstas', welfare bums), there are some people who are fine without it, and probably wouldnt be able to function properly in a military environment.

Plus, if we took all the males age X-Y out of society during those years of their lives, well... it would just suck for all the poor girls left behind. 😛

I'll say it too, before other people do... it's better to have a volunteer army than a forced service army.

While it can and probably does help numerous individuals straighten out their lives, Im sure theres an equal number of people who are doing just fine on their own and would be more productive doing other things.

While joining the Marines was one of the best things I ever did for myself, if I had been forced into it I would not have gotten as much benefit out of it. Instituting something like the draft when we absolutely need it is one thing, but forcing all males of servable age to do service when we don't need the elevated levels of servicemen is not in the best interests. You'd have mass riots, plus a huge number of people that were forced into it would not follow the discipline, thus making groups of people unreliable in combat. That would get many people killed.

Do I believe that the majority of people out there could get some benefit? Most definitely. But only if it's voluntary.

I don't need the military to teach me how to be a productive and responsible individual, thats what my parents did for me.

You are making the assumption that a majority of parents these days are capable of dressing themselves, much less raising a child.

I believe that forcing males to serve in army would be violation of freedom of choice unless the country faces great emergency that threatens this country and requires more military males to keep the country safe. At current time we are not at war with anyone, at least in sense of being attack on our soil. Until the time we have wwIII or the country safety is in great danger forcing males in to army just wrong and unconstitutional regardless of what congress says.

Mandatory service in the military? Hell no.
Mandatory service of some kind(either military or civil service)? Possibly, if that's what the majority wanted(I'm still leaning towards no though).
Simply put, it is not fair to force anybody to commit acts of violence.

Who says that being in the military means acts of violence? A lot (I wanna say majority, but not sure) of military positions are non-combat support positions. A lot of these positions will teach you valuable skills and give you the experience needed to get a good job in regular society. You could join the military to be a computer technician if you wanted to.

But you are quite close to supporting an infastructure that commits acts of violence. I realise that one can argue that living in modern society feeds the machine just as much but it's a necessary evil for the level of comfort that we are used to. It's also a lot less direct than directly serving in the US Military. Regardless, out of sight, out of mind.

You're making the assumption they aren't. Perhaps your parents failed at raising a well rounded child, but mine didnt and neither did Ameesh's. Forced military service would lead to a large amount of people moving out of this country. There's no need for it and its unconstitutional as stated earlier. I don't take well to people yelling at me for no reason thinking they know what I need. Not everyone needs "discipline" given to them by yelling directly in their face. Thats just stupid.
