Altec Lansing, Creative (cambridge), Logitech, and even the Bose/Boston acoustics solutions are NOTHING compared to their actual stereo systems.
I'm just running the SPDIF output of my MOTU 828 to a Denon DAP-2500A digital preamp, Muse 150 monoblocks, and a pair of IRS Betas. I think it sounds just fine, though I admit that I haven't tried comparing it to a set of dedicated computer speakers.
Granted, I only get stereo + subwoofer, but most of what I'm editing is straight stereo, and I actually want an absolute minimum of processing/filtering to be done on the audio--no simulated surround, added reverb, etc., because I want to know how the finished audio will sound when it's played on a standalone audio or video system.
