Assuming the reason for playing doctor is curiosity, should the child be taught info on sexuality as opposed to getting disciplined?

I guess it depends if he was "fixing" a knee or was doing some more intensive "examinations"

discipline would necessitate a child doing something wrong which they know is wrong. Curiousity can hardly be classified as doing something wrong.

it starts with fixing the knee, you're not doing it right if she doesn't end up with her pants down

i don't think it should be encouraged, and i don't think the child should be punished for it either. you can always explain things to a child with respect to his/her age. there are differences between male and female bodies. i don't think we should hide or not discuss those facts with children, but they need to know proper behavior.

Why would anyone want to punish them?

I remember my mom saying that she didn't want me to play doctor and me being totally confused by it. The doctor was someone everybody seemed to look up to and all he did was listen to my heart, look in my throat/ears, take my temperature, give shots, etc.

I don't think 3-7 year old boys are going to be doing any gynecological exams.

No, I think it is an important part of growing up...at least if one assumes that "doctor" is being played between two children of similar age and mental state.

Depending on the child's age it could be time for good touch, bad touch lesson. In this day and age one party may decide playing doctor constitutes sexual assault.

They should be disciplined if they get caught for breaking doctor patient confidentiality.
Also, if they don't do the right procedures when playing doctor, then whomever catches them should pretend to be a litigator and then they can play the "medical malpractice court time" game.

Of cousre, discipline is alway appropriate. But I am betting you mean punishment, which people often confuse with discipline. Avoid punishment at all costs. You certainly don't want them to grow up with perverse sexuality, which is the most common outcome when punished in such situations. If you are unclear on the difference between disciplin and punishment. Punishment hurts, discipline teaches.
