Should 18 year olds be considered adults anymore?

With they way the majority of them act, I would say the answer is no. And BTW, having a baby doesnt make you a man. It helps to increase the worlds wild overpopulation problem.

In addition, if they were truly considered adults, then why cant a 30 year hook up with an 18 year old without SOME PEOPLE going ape about it?

In fact, I would say you arent an adult until you hit at least 25. The insurance industry is inclined to agree. So if you are going to disagree, it better be good....

I think age has become an arbitrary number. I've known 15 year olds to be more mature than 19 year olds and I've known 19 year olds to be about as mature as a 12 year old.

That's funny, before I even clicked on this thread I had 25 in mind as the age where most people reach the maturity level of an adult. A lot of people don't realize they're not teenagers anymore until they hit 30.

I'm 22.

Age is just a measurement of how many times the earth has rotated around the sun since your birth. It shows nothing to the degree of maturity.

However, 18 is the common age for people when they leave for college, so it is convient that they be considered adults then.

BTW what do you mean by "In addition, if they were truly considered adults, then why cant a 30 year hook up with up without SOME PEOPLE going ape about it?"

Sounds to me like he's bitter because him mom gave him nasty looks for dating below the (age/2)+7 rule; that seems to be his only example and driving argument in this thread.

Wow, I never thought someone create a sweeping generalization that large. 😕

I agree. Just because someone is 25 doesn't make him an adult if he can't take care of himself, financially and otherwise, and act like an adult.

Depends what for. I think 18 is ok to drive (16 too young) and probably old enough to join the military. It's probably too young to get married in most cases 18 or 19 is probably fine for drinking. In terms of responsibility for crimes I think 18 is fine. Help weed out the scumbags early.

I'd agree with most of that. Drinking age should be higher but if you can fight for your country at that age you should be able to have a beer if you like.

I think the age to be allowed to join the military should be lowered to 16, possibly even 14. Technically (although it's very high risk) the military is a job, and if we lowered the age at which people could join the "bad apples" of high school may consider that a reasonable alternative and enlist. Then, instead of being on welfare the rest of their life they might be taught a thing or two and become respectable members of society. As long as we maintain the idea that you don't have to register for a draft until you are 18 (which at this point in time should be abolished completely) then I don't see much of a problem.

As far as drinking, well, it's perfectly logical for people to say that if you can die for your country you should be able to have a beer, but it's pretty clear to me that the drinking age was changed because many 18 year olds aren't responsible enough to not drink and drive. Aside from that, it would seem to me that if high school age kids would drink, it might be harder for them to finish school. After all, 21 year olds are always buying for people younger, and I think it's safe to assume that 18 year olds would do the same. The government has spent so much time educating students about drugs and alcohol and the such, I don't see any reason to give them a slap in the face for it. I'm all for losening the enforcement/penalties for it, but I think things are safer having 21 as the legal age.

I dunno, just some thoughts.

lotta spoiled brats..... 😛

If we raised the bar of what age you would need to be to be an adult, we would no longer have any teen porn, and that would be a bad thing.

There is no draft... we aren't sending 18 year olds to fight in Iraq... If you join the military you can drink on post at 18... there is no draft... there is no draft.

The people who joined the military at that age are not the ones who we are worried about letting get drunk.

What??................just because they look and act like a bunch of rodeo clowns??......Where's your touchy..feely??

So whats the difference than just labeling someone? Want to give us more specifics as to what you had in mind as to what the difference would be if you call a 23 year old an adult or a child? I tend to believe the longer you treat someone like the child, the longer they will behave like one.

Fwiw people aren't upset about a 30 year old and an 18 year old because one is an adult and one is a child, its because they're both at different points in life and adult or not, the younger one is probably being used or taken advantage of.
