Shoud I run my AMD2000 box Cover On or Cover Of?

hi all, it has been a while since I build my last computer (celeron 700) ...

Since my 386 machine, I have been running my box w/ the case cover taken off....

I wonder if this is still a good idea with the current AMD 2000+ cpu ? ... .. thosecpu generate so much heat and I start to wonder if I should run my box cover on ..? or cover off ?

I don't plan to mod the case to put in an extra 10 fans anyways.....

so..what do you think ?

Thanks a lot !

hey blkhawk,

welcome to the forums. generally speaking, you'll want to run the cover on. there's 2 reasons for this that i can think of. the first is noise. secondly, as long as u have good airflow through ur case, chances are u'll achieve better cooling with the case on. if you have it off, there can't be any tunneling effect of the air, which can result in higher temperatures.

hope this helps.

yeah.. that is what I have thought....

so .. it is time for me to 2 big fan than.. 1 intake... 1 exhaust..... man.... I just did the same mod to my car.. hahaha

i ran mine "cover off" for ages....as long as you keep a can of air on hand, you will have no problems....

wow wa261, thats a nice case u got there. im thinkin of moddin my case this sat. im scared to cut my case tho, its steel! :Q

anyway, yea, basically u wont want the noise and risking touching some stuff or disconnecting some stuff without the case on...

I run my duron 1.2 cover off b/c the case I'm using now doesn't have space to mount a fan bigger than 60mm for intake or exhaust. It gets a little dusty, but nothing some compressed air can't fix. If you have small children, or very curious animals in your house then you may not want to do it for their safety if they were to touch anything.

well, if ya do go coverless, and have kids or animals like the dancing peacock said, definately get some fan grills.. 🙂

I was thinking less their protection, and more the protection of the components 🙂. Imagine what a crayon stuck in your hsf fan would do. or a glass of grape juice spilled all over your case....I shudder at the thought.

<< wow wa261, thats a nice case u got there. >>

thnx bro =)

lol....a crayon in a hsf..that would suck! i can see my daughter now...."dad i made your puter look pretty"

hehe but I bet it would give a nice trippy coloring on yer comp ... I'm gonna try that methinks, on one of those fans that i'm going to replace anyway ...

anyway I would do it with closed case, my TB 1,2 runs 3 to 4 °C lower both case and proc with cover on

nice case indeed wa261.. and sweet office area you got there..

question: i noticed you have 2 case fans on the lower part of the case.. is their some hidden area where air comes in cuz i dont see many holes in that mirrored bottom area.. anyways, way cooler than my plain jane antec sx1030.

about the fans; the air flow is very restricted at the bottom....that was the reason i add the top 2 fans, needed more intake..if the temps start to rise i usually just pop off the 2 top front cover deals

Hey WA261, are those Sunon 120mm's? Are they the 108cfm model. Cuz thats what I have and these things are loud!!!!!! I also agree that it is safer and almost as effecient (if not more effecient if you are like most anandtecher's and get the mod bug, hehe) to run the computer with the case on.
