Shortcuts, XP desktop

After downloading updates from Microsoft.com, all shortcuts to files on harddrive stopped working, have to right click icon to get pop-up then click on OPEN to access file.
Shortcuts to websites (IE) still work.
Microsoft's answers and suggestions are useless as usual.
Any suggestions?
