What's the best thing that I could put my money in that will generate a decent return and is quite safe? Just wondering if there's anything else besides a cd.
 
Short term, very safe, decent return = money market fund or high yield savings account (ING, etc..). Those would be easiest for you anyways, there are other securities but a small casual investor doesn't really belong there until they know enough.
