The short circuit was caused in another part of the city when a major electricity cable was hit during maintenance of the street while digging but this was one of the results.
Luckily, the man survived with a few burnwounds.
30.000 people were disconnected from the electricity grid.

Liander, the company that is responsible for the electricity infrastructure in Amsterdam tried to restore electricity again only to causes several small electricitity substations to go up in smoke last night.
There are a few news items mentioning the firedepartment had to put out several fires in small electricity substations around the city.
I always hear at work that the electricity grid in London, England is problematic but this makes me worry about the grid in Amsterdam.

The coils in most transformers are immersed in oil that serves to both insulate them from the tank walls and to convect heat away to the cooling radiators. Before the downsides were known, nonflammable oils such as PCBs were popular. These days the oils used are all flammable, which makes transformers a fire risk when they are overheated and/or ruptured.

I didn't even realize there was a dude falling until the third watch. Dang. How do you even tell people about that? "Yeah so it was a normal day at work and then Hades decided to surface..."
