More info:

"Such behaviour is not characteristic of the soldiers and commanders of the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)," Netanyahu said in a statement released on Sunday. "It has no place in the IDF and the State of Israel."
Benny Gantz, Israeli military's chief of staff, also condemned the attack which he said would be "thoroughly investigated and treated with the utmost severity".

The military described the incident as "very serious" and said it was looking into "the circumstances leading up to this incident as well as on its repercussions", a spokeswoman said.

Quoting a military source, Israel's Channel 10 television said the officer apparently lost his patience as he and his troops tried to turn away cyclists shouting anti-Israeli slogans and waving Palestinian flags from an area defined as a closed military zone.

They are actually quite lucky they were not simply shot. You do NOT go into closed military zones in any part of the world - let alone in the Middle East. Since he was not authorized to use force, the military considers his actions to be very serious and are going to treat it as such. They cannot allow a soldier to cross such a line and not be severely punished. I suspect he will suffer quite a bit.

i am shocked someone has the guts to criticize Israel; isn't that a capital crime, in the US?

No but it's a way for any politician to lose votes... don't have any politicians posting on these forums that I know of.

At least the Israeli Government got rid of the guy.

They even took appropriate actions when one or two Israeli soldiers were caught on video apparently using Palestinians as human shields.

oh please. only because they got caught by the media. this stuff happens all the time.

Here's an IDF doc that tells soldiers to avoid media provacations:

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4217252,00.html

"Remember it takes only 10 seconds out of hours of video footage to cause irreparable damage to the image of the soldiers, the army and the State," an instruction page distributed by the IDF Spokesperson's Unit to soldiers serving in Judea and Samaria read.

The instruction page, which was obtained by Ynet, urges officers to remember that "the media, and especially the foreign press, is looking for strong images, even provocative, and therefore we must refrain from creating such images unnecessarily.
soldiers should be equipped with helmet cams at all times while on duty

this is no different than any of the American Soldiers in Iraq videos where they pose with dead bodies in a prison or throw a puppy in a canal. it's one idiot acting like a moron.

he's been fired, disgraced, his military career was all he had. he'll have a hard time finding a job now, his life could be ruined because of this so don't say he was no punished severely enough.

i have no sympathy for the guy, he's a settlements guy himself.
