They are actually quite lucky they were not simply shot. You do NOT go into closed military zones in any part of the world - let alone in the Middle East. Since he was not authorized to use force, the military considers his actions to be very serious and are going to treat it as such. They cannot allow a soldier to cross such a line and not be severely punished. I suspect he will suffer quite a bit.
