I am using a "bookpc" as a FreeBSD server... this unit came with a small ide cable that isn't ata66+ compatible. Do they sell small ata66 cables that only hae two connectors that are no longer than say 5 inches?

This case is pretty compact and I wont be able to stuff a longer cable into the case.

AFAIK the answer is no. shortest cable I've seen is just over 10 inches & has only 1 device connector!
why do you want to change the cable? the real world difference betweem ata33 & ata 66 hdd sustained transfers isn't that great!

His controller is probably ata33 anyways, (IIR my bookPC's corectly) so it is not a help to you.

no my ide controller is not an ata33 controller... it's an ata66 controller.

maybe I won't see a noticable difference... but I have an ata66 controller an a ata100 HD, so I might as well have it performing at the ata66 level.

The ATA spec requires the minimum cable length to be 10 inches. Max length is 18 inches. Minimum distance between the connectors is 5 inches.

I've worked on BookPC before and I can guarantee you can fold and fit the 10" ATA Cable in your system. If you can fit a 6" you can do it with a 10" by folding it into two which makes it 5" and have it held either with a tape or paper clips.

are you sure about that length requirement, because I am using two 24inch ide cables with no problems.

SCSIRAID is correct about the 18" maximum length which is officially stated in IDE spec sheets. There are a lot of unofficial 24" and even 36"+ cables out there.

As for a short cable, you can custom make your own if you buy the flat cable and connectors.
