Shopping for suits..

So what is a good suit? I am graduting in may and need a couple for interviews in the future.

So keeping within the budget of a college student. Where are some good places to get suits that are of good quality?

Mens warehouse vs Department stores(macy's,hechts, lord&taylor, nordstroms) vs other suggestions?

What are some things to look for when shopping for suits?

Thanks!

what size? If your like a 46 or 48 its kinda hard. If your in the neghborhhod of 42, check out sym's, lord and taylor's okay-better for their clearance stuff, nordstom's house brand is okay-+they're other stuff is meh. Wait-check out bluefly.com. Thats god quality stuff for cheap. I've seen $1200 Canali for 400 bones.

super 100's/super 120's wool. Get one good one, and pick up some quality ties. Get a 3 button/maybe double breasted depending on your frame. shirts are important as well. Pick up some nice shirts-boss is good stuff.

Brooks Brothers are the best.

they're higher end, but they're not the best-that goes to Brioni. On top of it, if you go to Brook Brothers, that will be their retail store, so no decent sales. They have an outlet-check that out.

I picked up a business suit 4 years ago from an outlet store and it friggin' rocks. Unbelieveably comfortable, and for some $80. You'll know a good suit, IMO, because it will feel comfortable. I also bought a new tux at the time (cheap, for high school orchestra) for around $100 and my god it was soooo uncomfortable, I hated it evey time I had to wear the cheap POS (I don't know what it was made out of). I'm not that experienced, but if it feels good, that's what really counts.

i got my one and only suit (still in college so no real need) at a local specialty men's store. it was close to $400 but its really nice.
my bro has gotten some suits from banana republic while they're on sale for about 150 or 200. they have some nice suits, but they're sold in two pieces (so you get the jacket and pants separately..so about $75 - $100 for each piece)

you really only need two-three suits in your life. one black, one grey, and the other as you wish.

and do buy one that FITS, overtly loose or tight will make you look like a 5 years old child tryign to wear his dad's stuff. and check out outlets and department store sales, you may pick up a nice one at a very good price.

i have one suit, cost me <10 at a secondhand store. fits "ok", has a couple small holes. ive only worn it a couple times. i wore it to an interview to my current job. it was the cheapest outfit ever. 9.70 for suit, borrowed shoes + belt from brother, socks from dad, shirt from a friend, tie was another donation from dad... underwear was all mine 🙂

I picked up a Joseph Abboud three-button wool suit at Norstroms a couple of years ago for about $800. I only wear it like three or four times a year at interviews, conferences, and special events. It's stylish and I hope to make it last for a long time.

I was instructed specifically by my GF at the time to go to Nordstroms. It was all about the service and having someone there to guide me. The guy in the suit section listeded to me and what I wanted and what the suit would be used for/as, then he helped me pick something out to meet my needs. Nordstroms also has a tailor in-house.

I agree a lot with andylawcc's comment about getting a suit that fits well. In my case it just wasn't going to happen. I've got wide shoulders and a 46-inch chest, but my waist is 33. Jackets come with matching pants that are offset by some fixed number. They usually adjust the pants by taking in the center seam that runs over your crack. If they had done that in my case, the back pockets of the pants would have overlapped at the center seam. So the tailor completely disassemble the pants by the inseam and outseam and sewed them back together again. I've looked at these pants pretty closely, and I can't see any flaws that would suggest they're not factory made. It's nice work. I had to go back for two fittings, but it's nice work.

It's likely that I'll go back to Nordstroms for my next suit. Something with a big designer label this time (if they have those at Nordstroms). 😀

I am planning on a Navy suit. My dad is recommending me to go to the mens warehouse, so i might check that out first, then go to the departments stores.

How long should the pants be? When i sit down, how much of my socks sould be exposed? past the ankle? Or just a little but?

1. Stop listening to the advice on this forum (save for this post).

2. Visit a respectable and trustworthy business that doesn't sell shite. Avoid department stores, if possible.

3. You will get fitted, and the salesman will help you with appropriate styles, etc.

4. Even if you have no intention of buying at a store that offers fittings, I suggest you get fitted anyway. You need to know your sizes, lengths, etc.

5. Treat this purchase as an investment and spend as much as you can.

Don't forget Kiton and Oxxford; Borrelli seems to be up there too. Brooks Brothers has been the victim of a well documented decline in quality and "prestige;" they used to be the most notable clothier in America, now they're just a shell of their old selves.
