you can play with the zoom setting at projector central. what I do is set the desired display size, the play with the zoom bar which is behind ths projectr representation. It shows 9' 3" as the minimum zoom.
Finally dawned on me after you and another guy told me so.

I went ahead and ordered an Epson 8700ub refurb this morning. Pretty big PJ, but I think I can handle that. The picture should please. I just hope it doesn't give me trouble. My Sanyo has been so trouble free, I'm spoiled. No unexpected issues over 8.5 years and 4458 hours, not even a bulb change. Well, one of the fans came loose a couple weeks ago but I think I have that under control. Now I need a bluray player, any suggestions?

how is your audio setup?

CRT projectors will offer you the best black levels and contrast, they usually can be found used for pretty inexpensive, and will often give many many thousands of hours of life (sometimes millions of hours on a single bulb.)

1,000,000 hours is 114+ years. You sure about that claim?

Actually, I don't normally use it when movie or HDTV watching. I'm right now listening to it for FM. But for HT use I use my high end Etymotics ER4S earbuds, 'cause I understand conversation better. I guess it's because the high end is more pronounced, not sure.

I have the JBL NSP1 5-Piece Home Cinema Package, a 100 watt subwoofer, a Kenwood VR-6060 AV Receiver. For the room it's in I believe it's adequate, the room is 12' 5.5" x 11' 1" [North<-->South]= 12.46 x 11.08 = 138 square feet + little closet.

Your receiver is getting up there in age and am a little skeptical on Kenwood (although not familiar with your particular model). Honestly if you are considering bluray then you might really want to consider something that can deliver the quality audio that blurays can have - uncompressed audio via HDMI. The difference can be very noticeable depending on the movie

Of course it doesn't look like your speakers would really be up to the task either and - while not named - I am guessing the sub too. I suspect this is why you like your earbuds more.

Newegg will often have the Polk Monitor60/70s on sale so you could get a pretty nice setup for $500-600

Add in something like a BIC F12*

*You may want to consider music/movie ratio when looking at a subwoofer esp at this price range.

The options just go up from there. There are a lot of other quality speaker makers (PSB, Paradigm, B&W etc) and sub makers (HSU, Rythmik, Outlaw, SVS etc) and its pretty easy to spend a lot on audio. For some reason some people don't find audio to be that important to the movie experience. For me it is just as important as the video. I have spent about $2500 on speakers and subs and love every penny spent. If you live in an area with some higher end audio shops you might want to drop in and listen to what they have. Might change your mind and there are some very good options out there for most budget ranges

as long as you are happy with it. Does your receiver handle hdmi? If so, live with what you got.

The receiver is pre-HDMI. Why does it matter? It does support S/PDIF, and that's what I use from my DVD player and my HTPC's sound card.

then you need to run hdmi to projector and digital out to receiver from your bd player. Whole point to hdmi is cable consolidation for consumer. For content provider is illusion of better copy protection.

Yes, I did a bit of research. I'll likely run optical from the HD player to the receiver to get my 5.1 for when I want to use that. There's stereo out from the HD player, and I'll likely run that to a small AM/FM receiver I have on top of the player. Will see if the player needs ventilation, my DVD deck doesn't. If so, I'll put spacers in there. I plug my earbuds into the receiver and use the treble and bass controls on the receiver. I just do this for movies. For HDTV I run the earbuds from my sound card.

err, whut? your receiver doesn't have AM FM tuner built in?

Why do you use headphones when you have 5.1?

No, the receiver is an AM/FM receiver. I have two receivers in my HT room. One's an AV receiver with 5.1, S/PDIF inputs, 5.1 analog inputs, etc. The other's a simple AM/FM receiver that accommodates phono and cassette input, from way back in the 1970s (when I bought it). I'm using the simple one with stereo outputs (and more importantly, for my usage, a headphone jack) just to amplify my earbuds. I use the earbuds because with movies there's typically lots of conversation and I miss a lot more of it using 5.1 audio from speakers. I'm sure it has a lot to do with my hearing. It's been claimed that my room has poor acoustics (in threads), and people suggest I try things to improve that.

I have tinnitus. I had a hearing test and everything from around 3000 hz and up I only register about 1/2 of the sound. Below 3000 hz they said I was basically normal. The effect of all this is that in certain circumstances I have a hard time making out what people say, such as in crowded rooms, rooms with poor acoustics. I can be somewhere with people and they understand each other fine and I can't follow the conversation. It's distressing. Take care of your hearing! Well, in my home theater I can rewind, turn on subtitles for a spell, that kind of thing, but if I can make it out the first time it's better, and Etymotic ER4S earbuds are expensive but pretty high fidelity. I miss out on surround sound with them, of course. Haven't watched a movie using 5.1 for a few years, TBH.

well, then stick with your headphones.

I love my new (refurb, but it looks absolutely new, haven't "tested" it yet) Epson 8700ub. Gorgeous picture, deep blacks, makes my other projector look pretty bad. The difference is not subtle, it's major.

as long as it is to your liking

I think avsforum has optimal settings for your projector.

Not much to dislike about it so far. It's kind of big, but I've dealt with that (about twice the size of my old Sanyo). It's quite a bit quieter, turns on and off way quicker, is a lot brighter, has awesome blacks/contrast in comparison. It doesn't have the flip lens/front panel protector, but that's a minor thing. Visual Apex provided a cover for it, but I think I'll fashion something easier to put on/off. I haven't tested it or made optimal settings attempts yet beyond turning it to Eco mode and turning down the brightness some. I'll look into those things soon. Have to paint the room a darker color! Controlling incoming light is one thing, but reflections from the screen back to the screen off ceiling/wall surfaces is a big part of optimizing a HT environment.
