Shopocalypse Now: Rev. Billy comes to town Sunday

BRATTLEBORO -- Before you understand Reverend Billy, you must learn a vocabulary word.
Shopocalypse.

"The shopocalypse is what we're doing right now," the Reverend said. "Just shopping ourselves to death."

The Reverend, who's real name is Bill Talen, said this impending doom is upon us. It has arrived in many forms. Anywhere from private depressions to global warming.

"We're consuming too much. That's a sin. That's the devil."

The Reverend will be performing along with his "Church of Stop Shopping" gospel choir and "Not Buying It" band at The Church, 120 Main St., Brattleboro at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The Reverend's good word says Vermont is in good shape. In fact, the state could teach him a thing or two.

Vermont, he said, is doing more to fight the shopocalypse than any other place he can think of. He added the impeachment resolution passed by the Vermont Senate was a "tremendous gesture."

"We're coming to learn from you," he said.

The performance he'll bring to Brattleboro is an "anti-consumerist" service from a man who has been leading a parade of fellow "stop shoppers" across the country, staging his "retail

interventions" at malls and big box stores.
These interventions are held at unsuspecting chain stores, where a group of people will set up and demonstrate, in various and rather creative ways, the bad side of corporate stores.

The Reverend said he's held thousands of these interventions across the country. One such demonstration landed him in jail after "leading prayers against consumerism" in Disneyland.

Oh, man, I can hardly wait. I hear he'll be televised in HD.
I need to run out and get a decent 50 inch Plasma. Can't wait to see the Shopocalypse in HD and my new 7.1 surround sound system.
