Shooting Range NY/NJ area

Hey all,

Me and some of my friends are planning on visiting a shooting range of some sort soon and I wanted to know if I should bring something or am I going to need something to be there. Is there a permit or something to acquire? Also, if anyone has suggestions for a shooting range type dealie in the NJ/NY area, it'd be most appreciated. Thanks.

PS - I don't own a firearm so somewhere that rents them and can give me a concise safety blurb would be nice.
 
Does anyone know if you have to be 21 to rent a pistol at a range? As far as I know its illegal for anyone under 21 to own a pistol so I wonder if the same rule applies.
 
Bring money and ID.

Ideally you should find a friend with some firearms experience to give you saftey pointers. Most range/gunstores should be staffed by preople who don't mind going through the saftey stuff though.
