Going to a hunting lodge on Sundya most likely. Going to practice shooting clay pigeons with a .22. Never shot anything before expect maybe a BB gun and a paintball gun. I'm sure I will get advice and lessons on it when I am there obv. but is there any advice you have too?

Yeah.... Have fun. ;)

Oh and they better give you lessons and some advice if you never fired a .22 before.

Do you really need advice? Ok then. Point the gun and shoot at the clay things. Have fun.

Some safety advice might be useful...

Don't point the gun at anything you don't want to shoot, even if you think it isn't loaded.

Thus no swinging the gun around like a loon, keep the gun pointed somewhere safe, like the ground or whatever the range instructor tells you to do.

Keep the butt of the gun snug against your shoulder. Too loose and the gun will impact your shoulder when fired rather than just transferring the recoil.

I see many people who fire first time holding the gun out away from them.

Range instructor = Dad of girl I am dating. Also meeting him for the first time..he is 6 foot 7 and I am scared of him lol. Being alone with him, my gal and a loaded .22 doesn't exactly sound like the best fun...but I really wanted to shoot haha.

Most .22LR rifles have about twice the kick of a BB gun.
They are quite a bit louder, but still nowhere near a higher caliber rifle or pistol.

They are called "plinkers" for a reason.

You will have a good time.

Don't hold the rifle like this.
You probably could with a .22LR rifle, but don't.

A BB gun and a .22 rifle have similar recoil - none. Even in a handgun .22 has very low recoil. Just keep the gun always pointed in a safe direction at all times, keep your finger away from the trigger until you are pointed at the target and ready to shoot, keep the gun unloaded when moving the gun to/from the range/car. Otherwise her Dad might slap you.

You've never shot a gun before and you are dating a woman who's father is a ranger instructor.
This IS your test you realize?

On a serious note. Just be smart about what you're doing. Only point at what you intend to destroy, keep unloaded until ready to use, keep safety on until ready to fire, keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction...the list goes on. If he's going to instruct you, then things should be ok.

It's a .22 It has little recoil and barely jumps.

Are you sure it's clay pidgeon targets with a .22!?

Yeah that's what she told me. Not sure though..what is the trad cal. used to shoot clays with? I feel liek even if .22 isn't ideal it woudl be a good starter for me since its low recoil, etc.

Clay pigeons are also used for stationary target practice... They easily break to a confirm a hit.

As others have said no big deal. Are you a lefty? That will make a difference with semi auto rifles and shotguns as the spent shell usually ejects to the right of the gun. If you don't stand correctly you can get that spent shell thrown at you. They usually don't eject too fast but they are hot.

We shot .22 in camp when we were teens they are fun realtively quiet.

The clays are usually thrown in the air with a machine and shot on the move with a shotgun. dEdending on the range and style there could be one or two thrown at the same time, one by one from the same location or thrown from multiple locations. It's actually great fun but you need to go with people that don't screw around. As your going with a range instructer that won't be an issue... unless you piss off his daughter;)

I've put the butt of a .22 rifle up to my groin and pulled the trigger. The recoil is unfelt...even against your package.

I can't imagine shooting clay pigeons with a .22. Shooting real pigeons with a .22 is great fun though. :D

Honestly, a .20 gauge shotgun would be ideal for a n00b. I have a nice O/U .20 gauge Beretta that I can shoot all day long and not get tired or sore.

A .22 is going to put you on the ground! It's recoil is about 3x that of a Mosin! You might want to get a pair of shoulder pads for it. :D

When did shoot get replaced by destroy? I always learned that it was only point a gun at things you intend to shoot. I constantly see people say destroy now though. Is this a lame video game thing?

Haha well as far as I know they are moving clays shot out of a launcher. And yes he will be watching and so will her brother who is also a large individual. Whatever I always wanted to shoot a gun and try it out. At the very least I can run pretty fast...:-/

lol she was messing with you...you didn't get the joke.

Or they are going to shoot clay pigeons that aren't moving (lame). Or they are going to shoot real pigeons.

There's nothing wrong with a .22 rifle.

They are great guns to just go target shooting with and can be surprisingly powerful and are pretty acurate.
I enjoy taking out the Ruger and doing some tack driving with it. Even with the crappy 500 rnd bricks you can buy, the grouping stays pretty tight.

Because it gets the point across better. Permanent, irreparable damage can be caused from the carelessness of a single second.

I'm wondering why they are having a novice try to shoot clay pigeons with a .22. I know many people that can't do the same with a 12-gauge and they even have a bit of experience. Unless these will be stationary targets. Then just have fun and take your time.
