DEVELOPING: Two people were shot dead and eight others wounded whena gunman opened fire near the Empire State Building in Manhattan, authorities said.
A law enforcement source told Fox News that the gunman, described as security guard, was a disgruntled employee who was fired Thursday from his job at a location either inside the Empire State Building or near it.
Authorities said the victims were shot just after 9 a.m. Friday and that the gunman was killed by police. A second law enforcement source told Fox News that one of the victims has died.
The FBI confirmed to FoxNews.com that they were on the scene investigating.
A security guard said he heard seven or eights shots fired in the shooting, which occurred at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue.
Witnesses reported that the gunman opened fire "indiscriminately."

The others should be merged into here.

Why do people go and shoot random strangers when they are mad at a specific person or place? Why not at least shoot those responsible for your problem? That way you (generic you) can rationalize it by saying you are saving others from your fate and teaching people an important lesson.

The innocent victems did nothing to warrant this.

Maybe because if you also kill innocent bystanders you can claim you snapped and go for the insanity plea? Targeted killing - act of revenge; random act of violence - I lost my mind. God I hope I'm not giving people ideas.

Of course you're right that the victims here did nothing wrong, just like the Sikh victims in Milwaukee, or the victims at the Dark Knight Rises shootings. That being said, in my experience it's not really worth trying to impute a rational explanation to patently irrational behavior. Each of these people, in one way or another, just snapped, and so it's not surprising, albeit very sad, that they chose their victims at random (though in the case of the Sikh shooting it appears there was likely a clearer rationale for how they were selected, even if it was a bigoted and ignorant one).

In any case, I'm glad the bloodshed at the Empire State Building was not worse, and feel for the victims and their families.

Maybe a new forum is needed, a Name Calling & Partisan Bashing Forum?

As it turns out, he did just as you suggested. The guy was apparently laid off from his job and fatally shot his boss. Apparently all of the other injuries, including the other fatality, were caused by police. This is as according to Gawker, at http://gawker.com/5937627/graphic-p..._source=gawker_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow (warning - the link contains graphic photos - I am using that link because they are the site I've seen that aggregates the information regarding the incident)

I could have been far worse. Glad it was not.

That would suck. I hope they find the police did not miss all those times.

Tough situation for the police responding to somebody in plain clothes. However not a good showing for them either. They did more damage than the shooter.

When the bullets are recovered, one can determine what type of gun was used. It seems this shooter obtained his gun legally in Florida. The media is alleging that the police shot 9 innocent bystanders. Check ballistics.

I'm curious what happened in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Some questions aren't answered...how physically does someone get out a gun when he/she are manacled in the back? Out of a group of three, 2 whites and one black man, why were the two white persons released?

Stop focusing solely on the murder victim, Chavis Carter. Focus on the factual details and what they signify.

We are a land supposedly of law. In America you are innocent until proven guilty.
