Some of my co-workers said they heard about some random shooting going on at Fort Dix? Can anyone confirm or provide details?

A reservist went nuts and shot 2 people. He then fled the base and died. They don't yet know if he was killed or if he shot himself.

Four Injured, One Dead After Fort Dix Shooting

FORT DIX, N.J. (Reuters) - An Army reservist called up for active duty after the Sept. 11 attacks wounded two soldiers and a policeman in a shooting spree on Friday before dying in a gun battle with police in a shopping center parking lot, authorities said.

A second police officer was injured in a traffic accident during a car chase after the gunman fled the Fort Dix Army reserve base in a marked military police vehicle. None of the injuries was considered to be life-threatening.

Police withheld the identity of the suspect, other than to say he was a reserve military police officer from Pennsylvania. Details of how the shootings unfolded also remained sketchy.

``The suspect is dead,'' New Jersey State Police spokesman John Hagerty said. ``He was a reservist on active duty from out of state. He was in fatigues.''

The suspect, who had been relieved of duty pending a psychiatric evaluation, opened fire with a .38 caliber handgun at Fort Dix, about 20 miles southeast of Trenton, shortly after 12:30 p.m. EDT after arguing with two of the victims, a Fort Dix spokesman said.

Reservist Shoots 2 at Fort Dix

FORT DIX, N.J. (AP) - A military reservist shot and wounded two soldiers Friday at Fort Dix, then fled the base and shot two police officers before he was found dead in a parking lot, according to police and broadcast reports.

The shootings apparently stemmed from some sort of domestic dispute, state police spokesman John Hagerty said.

It wasn not immediately clear if the gunman, a military reservist, was shot by police or if he killed himself, WPVI-TV reported. He was found outside a shopping center about 10 miles from the base.

``All of the sudden we heard semiautomatic rifle fire, and then there must have been about 45 or 50 cop cars and a helicopter,'' said Joan Hullings, an employee at a sandwich shop.

The episode began when the gunman shot one man in the chest and another in the thigh and abdomen outside of a barracks at the base's Army Reserve post, about 30 miles east of Philadelphia, said Fort Dix spokesman Kryn Westhoven.

Westhoven said the gunman fled the base in a Department of Defense (news - web sites) police cruiser.

The two wounded soldiers were taken to hospitals by helicopter. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The condition of the wounded police officers was not immediately known.

Fort Dix specializes in training and mobilizing reserves and the National Guard.

Troops have recently been called up to the base as part of President Bush (news - web sites)'s homeland defense initiative.

Thanks, although there are unfortunate deaths, I was expecting something much worse. People here were getting fanatical.
