that's crazy!

the one thing i miss on most digital lenses is the manual aperture ring. they should put those back on. i hate pushing multiple buttons or rolling a thumbwheel when i should be twisting a ring :(

The 5D is just awesome. I wish I could justify the price.
I don't understand why this guy is trying to reinvent the wheel though.

Even with that work-around, focusing must be terribly difficult. Even with 50mm f/1.4, it's damn hard if a subject moves vertically.

Cost. Film camera = $100k+. 5D = under $10k with a couple lenses.

The RED Scarlet should be a better deal tho. The 5DmkII looks awesome, but it still seems like it'd be far too cumbersome for any real use. This little experiment is just that.

Now, if the 5DmkII AF'd nicely, then we'd have to do some serious talking.

Tho, what it can open up is the whole podcasting genre to something a lot nicer, for not too much.

A low-end camera from RED would be a much better option (unless Canon decides to write a few lines of code in the next firmware update to unlock manual controls in movie mode).

still just music and some scenes. a cool little commercial maybe, but when you throw talking and action/movement, the 5DmkII gets limiting and very difficult to use than say a $5-10k RED scarlet setup (well, in theory, heh).

I don't think anyone is discounting the quality of video the 5DmkII can produce. It's just not a magic camera and you're going to have to have a ton of workarounds and whatnot to do a feature film.

I agree, but the Scarlet isn't available yet :(

I cannot WAIT to get my hands on a Scarlet! And some of those RED primes! Haha.

don't forget about the panasonic GH1. 1080p with 24p and full manual controls and "incredible AF" during movie recording. 4/3's sensor should be quite a bit larger than the 2/3'rd that the scarlet is using. Plus Zuiko lenses are famous for their ability to AF faster than any lenses on the market right now. Then you have the Leica D series on there too...
