I've had this game since it came out, played it like twice, however I recently decided to start playing again which brings me to my problem. The game says preparing to launch, then nothing happens, I can see shogun 2 in the task manager as a process but the program its self never loads. I've verified the game cache, and also de-fragmented it, but its made no difference. I really don't want to re-download and reinstall the game, any suggestions?

Check the game for integrity. Chances are it will make you redownload the game. It has happened to me before too. The problem is with Steam.

Check in the game directory to see if there is a directx installer. If so, run it, regardless of your OS. I know it sounds stupid and it may not solve your problem, but it's worth looking at. I downloaded a game on Steam recently that didn't trigger the DX installer and the game wouldn't run properly until I did it.

I've had this problem as well.

This is a problem caused by TCA's latest patch (great job, guys ).

There is supposedly a patch in the works to address this issue, but there is also a workaround.

WARNING-If you play a lot of online Avatar Conquest, this workaround MAY affect or delete your progress. It has no ill-effects on singleplayer however.

Anyway, this is the fix I found, suggested by Sega support:

If you are not able to start Shogun 2: Total War then please delete the preferences.script.txt file you will find at the following location:

- Windows Vista/7:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\scripts

Sounds simple enough, but it worked for me.

would not go to steam, probably need to complain to CA. check their forums for stickies and big threads about similar issues.

shogun has been trouble-free for me, but empire was a shitpile. sorry to hear you're having troubles, the game itself is pretty great; as was empire, which i couldn't play. so i feel your pain.

Just log off then log back on your windows seven account and the game should start up fine, it's the game not steam.
