I think Kobe was without contract for a while before signing with Nike, he was wearing and trying various shoes, including Jordan's during that time. Not sure what other shoe companies were giving competing offers when he picked Nike's.

On a side note, I got a pair of NB a couple weeks ago and they're infinitely more comfortable than the Nike's Im used to wearing. I liked them so much I got another pair as a backup ($25 shipped on clearance + coupon+ google checkout at sportsauthority.com)
