Shocks vs. Struts

Struts are found on Mcpherson strut type suspensions, which basically eliminate the upper control arm in a car.

Cars that have conventional type suspensions have a separate spring, shock, and upper control arm.

McPherson strut suspensions combine several components into one, such as the spring, shock, and upper control arm.

 
A Macpherson strut is essentially an integrated shock, upper control arm/mount, and coil spring in one assembly, and used as a major structural member. Advantages are reduced weight, compactness, and cost, and it is ideal for FWD applications. Disadvanteges is that it's not the absolute best handling system out there, as wheel travel can lead to changes in camber, but it is pretty damn good.
