I Just paid $70 for TWO Copies of Windows XP Professional, that is $35 per copy! The guy I bought them from who will remain annonymous told me that is what they cost to purchase from Microsoft. These are the same oem copies that you buy from Newegg.com that sell for 150+ and more. Now don't tell me MS is not making enough money on these. They could certainly sell them for $99 OEM and $125 retail and still make a nice profit. No wonder people are so desparate to pirate Windows.

I can remember when Windows 95 Retail cost only $150 USD and the OEM version was around $99. Paying $300+ for Retail XP PRO is a rip-off! Special thanks goes to my inside source!

Most people who don't build their PCs have the OS come with it, and that is often overlooked by system builders, especially on enthusiast forums. If the OS cost $500 a copy, it doesn't make it right to pirate it. It is illegal to buy an OEM copy if you didn't purchase it with hardware, by the way. Microsoft offers discounts to system builders, but most of that is only promotional stuff (not like 50 copies they can resell).

A product is worth as much as the market is willing to bear.

Do you think a multi-million dollar peice of artwork cost the artist that much to make?

1. $35 for an employee discount price is not unreasonable.
2. Who said Microsoft was not making enough money?
3. Most users do just fine with XP Home, which is 2/3 the cost of XP Professional.

He's paying for it, so how is he a pirate. And his friend is prolly a distributor or something if he gets low price from Microsoft.

Ever think that with Vista around the corner, MS is selling the discs at a discount to eliminate inventory?

Yeah, but you still need to take account technical support. That cost is not in that $35.

I bought a legit copy of XP home when I built. That was almost 15% of my computer build, but I figured my athlon 64 wouldn't work too good without an OS, and I didn't want to deal with linux.

Shocking!

I brought a waffle iron for 25 cents at Goodwill that costs $25 at Walmart! OMG!

edit: Whoops, my intial read of your post was very sloppy. But I'm still in the cynical crowd because I'm skeptical of your source -- whoever it is has to be buying huge (like majorly huge) quantities of licenses to get them at that price. It was nice of them to pass the savings on to you! There are a lot of pirated copies of Windows XP out there -- very very well made copies too.

Sorry but XP Home is nothing more than the software equivalent of the 486SX chip. It is the exact same OS dumbed down. I'll pay the other 1/3 and get the whole OS. I do think that MS is short sighted in not being willing to price some deals for the home/enthusiast market, something along the lines of a 4 machine pool license. In the end though it is their product and they can decide how to sell it and what to charge.

But this is the wholsale cost not the garage sale price.

I have seen some of those, they are very good indeed. But Side By Side you can tell the real McCoy from the fake. This guy now works for a partner of Microsoft and he used to work for Mr. Bill.

It's too bad Win XP Pro doesn't have a spell-checker built in! :p

I know how to spell and this is being typed on Windows 2000 Professional. I just have very large fingers so typing on a Non IBM Model-M Keyboard is difficult for me; I am using a POS $9 wal-mart special:(. Wholesale.

Microsoft is not only paying for the cost of the media to give it to you, but for all the research that went into creating that software. Microsoft is also financing their future R&D through the revenues they bring in today.
