The engineer doesn't make money for the company or anybody. He just does what he is told, he's a sunk cost, an expense, he doesn't generate revenue. Sales and executives are what actually make the company money and in turn money for shareholders. The engineer and regular staff level employees creates none of this, they only do what they are told.

Not really. Account exec is the typical term for a salesmen that sells business to business, they aren't really executives. These are the folks selling millions of dollars of product or services and they get their percentage of the total deal. A 1% cut of a 5 million deal is still 50 thousand and most will close multiple such deals a year (otherwise they'd be fired).

Good buddy of mine sells cell tower space, he's raking in the dough (easily over 300k). All for being a people person and knowing how to sell. So he's making his company a tremendous amount of money and getting his cut of it.

Sorry, got mixed up with the terms. In my field, most Account Execs make no where near that kind of money. The only ones that come close are the National Account Execs or those that are assigned specific large accounts. On average, sales people are sale people...they make what they can and some succeed but most don't. Either way, good sales people do get compensated well because of the opportunity to make the big deal.

I can admit that great, if not just good, sales people make pretty good money. But there are far more loser sales people to drag down the numbers. I look at it as a risk/reward system for sales people. Those that succeed will do really well, those that coast by or fail aren't going to be in the business for too long.
