I helped my little brother build a computer about 9 months ago and now want to do the same (by "help" I mean I posted a build thread here and took all your advice)

Call it a gaming rig, although i'm not super hardcore about getting the absolute best gaming experience.

here's what we got for him

Case: Antec TX 1050B with the specialty drop away door for fast access $119 has the PS

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard $103

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor $205

Video Card: SAPPHIRE 100186L Radeon X1950XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported $168

He also got some decent RAM and a 250 gig HD. I'm prolly gonna buy the case, MOBO, and CPU now and grab the vid card and RAM over the next month or so. I might grab a big hard drive to replace the 3 hand me down 40-80 gig ones I have eventually, but not worrying about it now

Do I stick with those parts or have other things become better deals in the last 9 months? I like how his runs, seems to have power to spare for our type of usage. On the other hand he has a very nice 32" LCD HDTV he uses as a monitor, whle I have a 15" flat CRT I bought at a garage sale for $8. I will be getting a new monitor sometime in the forseeable future, prolly LCD in the $200-$300 range. Is that vid card overkill for less than a higher end monitor? I wouldn't even consider getting that one except for the massive price drop since he bought it.

Money isn't an issue,

its actually a huge friggin, had to sell a truck to afford this, 3 yr olds and wives are expensive,---concern.

As always, I wait with bated breath for the deluge of brilliant advice I have come to depend on from here. Plus, afterwards I can pass off all the advice in a sagely tone of voice to others who ask me about my rig :D

there is no reason to go with the 965p chipset mobo nowadays. Just go with the p35 chipset. Also, for $205, you can get a better c2d cpu (like the e6750).

good p35 motherboard? I'll be browsing the reviews, but am pretty weak on motherboard/cpu knowledge.

I'd go with $100 E4x00 and $70 Abit IP35-E (AR @ MWAVE). Rig should be able to hit 3.0 to 3.2GHz, which is plenty fast for anything you want to do today. Go to the MB forum to learn more about Abit IP35-E. The $20/GB AR HP DDR2 667 RAM will work well with this combo. Again search the HOT DEALS forum. RAM will overclock to 400MHz with 2.0Vdimm.

Intel Dual-Core E2160 Allendale 1.8GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775

looks good? The reviews were practically fawning. I've never OCed before but will prolly give it a shot w/ this build

ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX
for the MB

newegg has a combo with a SAPPHIRE 100199L Radeon X1950GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 but I was thinkin of stickin w/ my first choice card. Any reasons besides the price difference to go with the combo?

I assume the gargantuan case I'm planning on ordering will be plenty breezy and roomy. maybe i'll go nuts and build a refrigeration system for the cooling (im a heat and air guy so I could build it for free) what do you think, 24,000 btuh be enough? hehe. Of course my cooling system would end up being 3X bigger than the tower... maybe i'll see how the fans do first.
