Basicly, freshman year my class was about 490 kids. Now at the beginning of Senior year, we're down to 280. Bastards... It dropped my rank from the Top 5% to Top 10%...

Woa that's a 43% reduction. WOW

just remember that you're going to be paying for those kids who have fallen through the cracks of the education system - oh, and their lives will consist of living check to check trying to not get shot.

But hey, you're now in the top 10% of your highschool and not the top 5%, I feel sorry for you

Yes, my personal tradgedy... Of course it's a given that the state will suffer more because of the 210 drop out (probably less or half of that since people move, or whatever which is still significant). What more can I say? Quincy, MA used to be an affluent city.. I guess all the spending going into shity (city) projects has started to have an affect on the public school system.

The real tragedy here is that there is a public school where a person with your command of the English language is in the top 10% OR the top 5% of his class.

1) Where do these kids live? I have a hunch that they don't come "nice" families where education is actually valued.

2) MA has some very good public schools. But then again that could vary from city to city. I'm sure the inner city schools are much different then their wealthier counterparts.

3) I'm a firm believer in Maslow's Hierarchy. It means that if a child's basic needs aren't being met then how the hell is that child going to achieve academic success? For instance, if a child has to live in fear of street gangs and not knowing if they're going to eat dinner that night then do you really think that they are even worried about education? Hell no! Education to them is an after thought. Sure there are some kids that make it but most fail.

4) Drugs/Gangs/Crime usually plays a much bigger role and most are either in jail or dead before they turn 25 years old.

Exactly. Maybe if you grew up in Japan you could brag about being at the top 5% of the class.

Just be happy you're not like my old school, where loads of students and poorly-managed funding leave to overcrowded classrooms, but at least we spend lots of money on our football team.

I don't know... I didn't make the top 5%, but I was in a class of 34 so we only had 1 person in our top 5%. :) I was happy with top 10%. I think parents put a lot of pressure on kids... SAT prep courses and all that. Particularly Asian families from what I've read on AT over the last couple of years.

Yup, I was sent to SAT Prep but thats it. I was raised to do well in school and they didn't need to pressure me on that.

Wthe the fvck is wrong with my english? Am I writing some damn essey here? NO. I'm just communication on a forum using basic phrases and psuedo sentences and phonetic spellings ( don'g feel like opening up words for difficult words) to convey my thoughts. Openning word to do some spell checking takes too much effert, and I'll probably loss my thought as to what I'm writing when I go through a grammer check. Gesh... Anandtech is so critical of the english language for mostly math orientated people... And this would actually be an offense to a lot of asians. I know, not at my school, but at North Quincy HS the whole 10% of the class is mostly compressed of asians who speak in some awkward asian accented dielect. They're awsome people non the less. So LAY off the freaken grammer whoring.

Simply put: Education is an after thought in America.

Oh, we'll say that education is important. It usually ranks in the top 3 important issues during the presidential election, but talk is cheap.

1) We have 20 year old zit faced Best Buy managers who make just as much or more then teachers. If the education establishment wants to attract the best then they need to start paying better salaries. Hell, my dad who has an 8th grade education makes 3-4 times more than most tenured teachers.

The list is many. I'm going to sleep.

Seriously though, when you're job hunting I doubt that going to a top tier college is going to land you that dream job. I would think other factors such as grades, resume, interview, people skills, would have a greater impact.

Top universities offer valuable experiances that more affordable ones don't nessesarilly have. For example WPI and Northeastern both have Co-Op programs which would give you the nessesary experiance out of college to land a good job (which usually require experiance).

there were 585 kids in my daughter's freshman class and 402 or so graduated, and while I don't recall the numbers, it was about the same with my son so.. maybe that's typical? but they both moved up in class rank/% both, as the numbers dropped.

the numbers drop for a lot of reasons.. some kids graduate early. some get held back but do graduate next year. course.. that happens every year so probably doesn't count. some move as the suburbs grow. some get tired of the highschool crap and take the GED and hop straight to community college at 16. some move to more elite highschools.. magnet programs, governor's schools, prep schools.. some just drop out.. but not 200 of 'em.

OMG make it stop! It's getting worse!

I would not have said a word about your spelling or grammar ordinarily, but given that the subject of this thread is that you are disappointed by being knocked down from the top 5% of your class to the top 10% by drop-outs, I thought it was appropriate to comment on the fact that if a person who is in the top 10% of their high school class is not able to spell simple words, that is indicative of a serious deficiency in public education. I don't think you should open up Word to spell check your posts... I think that if you are in the top 10% of your high school class you shouldn't HAVE to open up Word to spell check your posts. That's my point. Which you clearly didn't get. Minus another point for public education.
