Shitty router or special settings needed?

Picked this up at Best Buy: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AZP8EW

And it's been a nightmare. Set up was easy enough but after a week of having it my internet would cut out (while still connected to the router). It happens on my laptop via wifi and another laptop connected via ethernet as well as my iphone/tablet.

It looks to be DNS related as I can type in an IP address, and it'll "redirect" to the domain it is (e.g. Google/Amazon.com) but won't connect. I've had good access for a few days but sometimes it'll stop working for 30-40 minutes even after several resets.

Are there any settings I can look into or is it just a bad router?

No, not what firmware, what hardware version? It should say on the back spine. There are four hardware revs. Rev 2 is Broadcom, and Rev 3 is Atheros. Both of those Revs can take DD-WRT.

I've used several of those routers fairly extensively (bought refurb), without problems, with DD-WRT installed. Those were Rev 2 units.

What DNS are you using? I had to switch an office from Comcast to OpenDNS in order to keep a stable connection.
