Shipping package via USPS

I shipped a package today through my local Post Office and got a receipt which I figured had the tracking #. When I got home I wanted to check what it said online in their track & confirm section but then I realized there is no tracking # on the receipt.

Did I have to ask for some special service in order to get tracking? How much does that cost?

the only real tracking you can get is with Express Mail, the overnight service

if you used priority mail or first class, you could have paid extra (or done it online) for delivery confirmation, which is not tracking

Yep. I usually ship USPS Priority with delivery confirmation for an extra $0.50
