Shipping mixup from Amazon...what would YOU do?

I ordered some textbooks from Amazon on Sept. 3 (a total of 2 books). They supposedly shipped out of Amazon's warehouse on the 6th, but since then, the UPS tracking info has just been stuck at "Billing Information Recieved." Seems like it got lost somewhere or it was sitting at the back of a truck and no one noticed it.

On Sept. 14 I called Amazon Customer Service and they acted really sorry about the whole thing, and sent me out a new set of books (well, actually, one of the two books - the other one was out of stock so they just refunded me the amount for that single book) and it should be here soon (they upgraded the shipping to Second Day Air so the new package should be here Wednesday).

However, just on a whim I checked the tracking info for the OLD package today and someone seems to have found it, as it's on its way to Ann Arbor as we speak, as is the NEW, reordered package.

What should I do? Should I call Amazon after recieving both packages and explain? Or should I just ignore it and appreciate the free gift from Amazon?

I don't think they'll ever know if I don't say anything, because both packages have been shipped; as far as Amazon is concerned, the books are gone and they're not getting them back.

Your thoughts?

If you do indeed receive both packages, leave one of them sealed & call to see what they want you to do with them.

Or you could just refuse shipment on the second shipment, though that could result in your money being refunded which would defeat the purpose...

I'd call them.

I agree with Viper, If you do receive it I would check with them and see what they want you to do with it.

Definitely call them to find out what to do. They may tell you to keep it, they most likely will not. I had a similar thing happen a few years ago and got charged twice for the two packages with the same contents. Be careful, whatever you do.

Call them and let them know.... they will find out someday. I had a friend who recieved a GF4 4200 Ti in addition to the GF4 420MX he ordered and used it for over two months. The company (Bestbuy.com) called him 2months later and asked "We shipped the wrong product to you in addition to your purchase. We'd like it back..." My friend said no and they said they'd charge his card if he didn't return it. Which they did 1 week later...

That's illegal. It is illegal to send someone something they didn't order unless it is clearly marked a free gift, however if you do send someone something they didn't order, it's illegal to demand repayment or return of those goods. Your friend should contact the state attorney general. It's a "nice thing to do" to return it, but you don't have to.

For this kind of thing, I'd either refuse the delivery of the extra item or contact Amazon and ask what to do.

A couple years ago I ordered a pricey blackwood practice bagpipe chanter from a small company, and after a few weeks it had not arrived, so I called them up and while the one I ordered was out of stock, they offered to send me a comparable replacement.
The replacement came in 3 days.
The original came the day after that!
I called them twice and sent 3 e-mails--I didn't want to cheat a business out of $120 of merchandise, but no one returned my calls or e-mails. I kept the thing in the box for a year, and decided it's way past returning.

Ya dude, call them before you do anything at all. There's no sense to take advantage of their sincerity of getting you what you ordered.
