Hi guys,

I want to buy an IBM 60GXP 40 gig HDD from Coolerguys.com
but one thing bothers me... is Canadian customs gonna make me pay anything for passng the HD through? Im afraid they're like gonna bill me 50 bucks extra for the hard drive..

Have any of you that live in Canada bought HD's
(or similarly priced/sized items) from the US? If so, please tell me what happened. Im buying this HD on my dad's credit card so I have to know what's gonna happen with the customs.

Thanks a lot for any help

When I bought RAM from Mushkin, you pay duties on the item (which just tax), so me, living in Ontario, had to pay for the Item, Shipping, and Duties (15% More).
Example: Item costs $100, Shipping is $15, in the end I paid a total of $130 dollars. $15 of it was duties.

Yep, your going to get nailed. It sucks, because sometimes there are really nice prices in the states...

You could check out www.pccanada.com

They don't sell the IBM, but the ibm has had some issues, so mabye you want a maxtor or quantum?

Just a thought..

NCIX.com have the 60GXP for 220$, and you save provincial taxes if you live outside of BC. It'll probably and up cheaper, and will get to you faster than ordering from the US.

<< I got charged $75 for customs for my 20gig 7200rpm IBM Deskstar 75GXP... >>

you think that's bad?, I got charged 40$ custom fees for a 7$ computer fan! :|

yup...

i got charged for my rio500..and then i guess they include charges in borderfree from whenever i've bought crap through them...

what the hell is NAFTA for again???

I have bought tonnes of stuff online from US sites and had them shipped to Ontario. You get charged the tax and that's it. I never got charged anything more. Your credit card will do the currency conversion and charge you in cdn dollards. Then when the delivery guy comes to your house or if you pick up your package at the Post office then they won't give you your package until you pay the tax upfront. So make sure you calculate the tax and have it ready to pay them.

For most items on online sites i find even with conversion and shipping and taxes, you still end up saving $10 or more.

HAHAHAHAHA................................................................

I got charged 100 $$ CAN more for my Klipsch promedia's 4.1......

The guy wrote a higher value on the box.... so I payed taxes on the VALUE he wrote... not the REAL value. THat pissed me sooo much but I liked the speakers soo much that I said "Oh well, that the hell ! I'll know for the next time !" LOL !!! 🙂

THOR !

You should have laughed and told them it was an unsolicited shipment, and they can send it back for all you care =)

That is assuming UPS brokered it without contacting you... if you have a REAL broker then they'd be pissed off if you ripped them off like that =)

what the hell is NAFTA for again???

nafta actually works really well, 97% of imports have no duties applied to them (just my rough estimate) and most of the rest gets only 2% duty (some food items & other weird things i believe)

On the other hand, of course taxes are high, come on this is canada what do you expect, people here LOVE their high taxes

Most of the time I don't have a problem.

One time I ordered an sound damping (sp?) pad for $20 US, and had it shipped UPS. By the time I got it I had paid $100 US in taxes, duties, brokerage fees and so one. That was on top of the $20 US I had paid to ship it.

Just yesterday I found out that in British Columbia the local government charges both PST and GST on incoming items over $200 CAN. So I had to pay $450 in taxes for my $2000 US laptop. 🙁

Check out BorderFree.Com

You can buy through them, anything at any US site.. They will give you a quote in CDN$ everything included.. Then you decide if you want it or not.

borderfree.com is great. saves on a lot of customs fees and stuff like that. (but it'll still cost ya)

and if you're gonna ship from US to Canada, DO NOT use UPS!!!!!! they will charge you so many brokerage fees that you'll end up crying! TRUST ME, I speak from experience. and LOTS of experience!!!

generally, if you want to ship anything from US to canada... make sure you'll be saving around $60 dollars from just buying it in Canada... or else it's not worth the extra shipping / brokerage / and custom fees.

If it can be mailed directly, Canada Customs will charge you a $5 processing fee, federal and provincial taxes (just as if you purchased locally) and applicable duties. There are no duties on US or Mexican manufactured goods but IBM HDD's are made in Hungary or Malaysia so it just depends on whether they look at the goods in which case there may be an additional 2 to 2 1/2% or so assessed (check with Revenue Canada Customs to find out the rate). The way you really get screwed is if a brokerage is used and they pile on their fees. Check with the US merchant how they are handled. But first, as said, check Canadian merchants for prices. Another option is importing it yourself by having it shipped to a postal service (Mail Boxes Etc., etc.) in a neighboring state thus avoiding all fees and only paying aforementioned taxes (and maybe duty). If you do that you want to make sure the merchant does not collect tax for that state or else you will be triple taxed.

Some people are getting quite confused here.

There are:

Duties: Usually none for computer stuff shipped from the US
Taxes: GST and sometimes PST
Shipping costs
Brokerage fees: Ranges from $0 if it's included in the shipping (eg. FedEx Air but not ground, some of the expensive UPS options), $5 if you go USPS/Canada Post, or a lot depending on the broker (eg. FedEx Ground or UPS Standard) and the value of the item.

Now remember, you have to pay GST and PST if you had bought it in Canada, and brokerage fees have nothing to do with customs per se, so don't get pissed at customs for GST, PST, and brokerage charges. The only valid thing you can blame customs directly for is duty, but as I said there is no duty on the vast majority of computer equipment coming from the US.
