shipping from UK to CANADA... what's involved? how much will customs steal from me?

just wondering... I wanna buy something for 400pounds in UK shipped to canada. I'm pretty sure customs will charge 15% taxes... but what are the duties and other crap involved?

tax: 15% on pretty much everything
brokerage fee: varies between shipping companies ($5.00-$50.00)

oh, that's not too bad .
cuz someone told me it was like 20% of the value. and since 400pounds would be $1000 canadian... 20% is quite a bit!

even if it's $50, I wouldn't mind.
