Shipping from Canada to US

I'm thinking of buying some skis off ebay, but the guy is shipping from Canada. He's willing to ship to the US, but I don't know if I will get hit with customs fees. Do you guys know if it's something I need to worry about?

In case it makes a difference, the skis are $180 and shipping is just under $30.

Depends who he uses. If he ships via Canada Post, which becomes USPS at the border, you're probably safe. Might get dinged for state sales tax.

If it's UPS/Fedex/DHL though, no guarantees. I know UPS likes to add $50 fees for "inspection and paperwork" to make sure that it's nothing dangerous. :roll:

The guy has "Standard Int'l Flat Rate Shipping Service" listed as the shipping option if that means anything to you.

That just means he'll use whatever eBay's "standard" shipping is, probably Canada Post. Ask him for details though.

I have asked him already. I'm just too impatient to wait for a response. I want to BUY IT NOW!!!!!

I think UPS has an international service that they guarantee you won't be charged any extra fees.

Probably costs an extra random $50-100 dollars. :roll:

Wait and see if he will ship through Canada Post. If not, pass.

UPS will rape you at the border. Charges are high, and unknowable ahead of time.

fwiw, my experiences have been crossing the opposite way, USA--> Canada

That seems correct. And I would warn anyone against shipping to Canada using UPS. They will hold your package hostage at the border and try to extort mega fees from you.

Fedex actually seems to be a bit better about US/Canada shipments.

I'll let you know tomorrow. I ordered something on Amazon, and it turns out that it's being shipped UPS from Canada. Scheduled delivery date is tomorrow. I do hope it doesn't come with fees attached.


Tracking info says:

04/18/2007 6:59 A.M. PACKAGE DATA PROCESSED BY BROKERAGE. WAITING FOR CLEARANCE;RELEASED BY CLEARING AGENCY. NOW IN-TRANSIT FOR DELIVERY

It's from a business if that matters.
On the order form, the address lines appear configured for US addresses.

But I do notice their website has an asterisk:
"* These shipping fees do not necessarily represent UPS published rates and may include handling charges levied by this store."

The seller's Amazon profile says that they ship anywhere in the continental US. The only mention of taxes and duties are for countries outside the US and Canada.

I do hope there are no problems, I don't feel like dealing with such an issue.

in southern ontario, if you just walk into the mount hope or pearson airport UPS offices and BS a good story, you can clear packages no problem. 🙂
