I've got a box full of textbooks I want to send to my new residence, my question is, how does the post office know I'm not just using this discounted rate to send other stuff and give me this discount without breaking open my box and checking? I'd like to get this savings.

they will periodically open your stuff up, they have the right. if they are not too busy and they see a box that is marked "Bound Printed Matter" and it feels fishy, they won't hesitate to open it up, in fact it is encouraged and some people get bonuses for having the most "4th class" frauds found....

I think they can just do x-ray screening thing and see what's inside?

they don't do x-ray, they just open it up. a box cutter is much cheape than a x-ray machine. the postal service owns your mail when it is in their service so they can do whatever they want to it.

Just want to see if I need to bring an open box to "prove" to them that I'm not scamming them in the first place, or if I can pack the stuff up prior to going to the post office and save myself the hassle.
