shipping a bike

I have read online a few places that you can put your bike in on as a peice of your luggage. I have looked online at the airline websites but they give no clear answers. Most say that within the US they charge 85 bucks..but all the accounts i read online where it was free have been international. It still confuses me tho cause it says size limit is 62inchs...surely a bike must take up more space then that.

Any expereicne here guys? Thoughts?

You can't just hand them a bike and be on your way... your bike has to disassemble to some degree and you gotta check it as oversize luggage... All of the people that I saw taking bikes with them when I went to Ireland in September had hard cases for them that fit size requirements, bikes disassembled to properly fit the cases/size requirements.

When in doubt, call the airline and ask what they recommend. Different airlines may have different policies.

yeah i know i need to take off a bunch of stuff..turn things backwards and such...I guess i will call tomorrow. I just hate calling airline people..they are always so rude and then they bounce you around..and even if you get an answer its gonna be diffrent when you get to the airport when someone says " dont know where you heard that"

just for anyone else that wants to know...
United Airways INTERNATIONAL Policy says if its in a bike box, or bike case...it counts as one of your two luggages and is free.
