I bought this tonight at Pasadena Bestbuy, originally want to buy the $79.99 Mintek 2580, but saw this one, should be exactly same hardware, just different look of the machine and the remote - all the keys and arrangement are the same. Shinsonic is a known brand in China and Hong Kong.

I'm going to refund the Apex 1100W from Walmart, although Apex 1100W is newer and support jpeg cd, but it can't let you choose L or R audio for playing VCD.

For $7 more, Shinsonic or Mintek is a better deal, has component output and LED display, and can select L or R audio - this is the most important thing for playing VCD.

for a family member that you don't want to dish out more money

Got this player for a few people on Black Friday. I was suprised by the quality of such a cheap dvd player. I haven't used one yet myself, but everyone I got one for seems to like it. I think it has component output, and plays kodak picture cds too?

For a huge dvd player compatibility list, check out www.vcdhelp.com and most likely you will be able to find hacks for your dvd player if available and also if it handles mp3,vcd,cdr,cdrw, etc
