Can I use my regular Athlon shim on the Althon XP I plan on buying? The one I have is copper, and I thought I read that some of the jumpers were different. But, I was still wondering.

I don't mean to harp on the issue but if the cores are different heights then how can newegg.com be selling this:

Am I just dumb or don't the cores have to be the same height for this to work?

Maybe the cores are the same height then. I know that packaging is different heights between the organic & ceramic packaging, but that's differnent from the core height. Personally I wouldn't worry about a shim though....but if you feel you need one, that one should be ok as newegg does cover it for an AthlonXP (if it messes it up....newegg will have to get you a new cpu I would think).
 
Well, the only reason I use one is because I watercool my computer and my waterblock has a clamp that I had to make, thus I am worried about applying unequal pressure to the core and cracking it. If I were aircooling I wouldn't use one, but it's a good precaution when using any sort of clamp that requires human adjustment.
 
If weren't using a HSF with a bad clip design, I wouldn't use a shim. If you are using a clamp, don't bother. You will be able to tip the block enough to break contact with one side even if you use a shim. The main thing about a clamp is not to get it too tight.

If you see the socket or the m/board PCB (depending on clamp style) bending enough to alarm you...................guess what?................Too tight 🙂 16-20lbs pressure
