shims and thermal compound!?!?

This might sound like a stupid question but...If you use a shim, do you still need to use thermal compound? If you do; do you put some compound on the shim too?

I wonder why this question gets asked so much?

YES you do still need to use thermal compound.
NO you don't put any on the shim.

The shims ONLY use is to help you avoid crushing the delicate CPU core when mounting heavy heatsinks - it does NOTHING to help cooling!

Shims is not necessary. Using it just to reduce risk (core breaking)...but there r still risk. I've seen ppl here fried their CPU using shims due to improper contact, non-contact & etc. U might solve the core breaking fear...but there r other waiting.

U don't put termal compound on the shims. Depends on ur shims...just in case u ask. Do not also remove tht 4 pad around the CPU when installing the shims.

"DO NOT REMOVE THE 4 PADS" ?? if the shim does not have holes for the pads, they must be removed before installing the hsf. Some shims now have holes for the foam pads, others do not. As posted, you can have lots of troubles with shims, the manufacturing tolerances must be good, otherwise the HSF will not sit flat on the core, they can easily warp, same result. My recommendation, don't use 'em.
