My buddy at nV gave me a beta copy of a new driver revision he said was being made available to some reviewers.

The driver reportedly fixes the shimmering issue between mipmap boundaries with only a few percent fps reduction.

I have an appointment to check out a new winter storage place for my boat soon, but will post my experiences with this tonight. As usual, I have to think if a guy like me can see this, it will be posted soon.

Thought some of you might be interested.

Some skeptics have speculated the fix for the is bug would result in massive loss of framerate, or that the bug itself was intentional for initial review benchmarking purposes. My play earlier tonite, and the following benches, convinced me this is a driver bug that has been addressed. The gentleman at nVidia asked me to note that these are pre-production drivers that they are still testing, but my experiences so far show them solid.

HL2 16X12 4X8X Quality 77.72 4X8X High Q 77.74 4X8X High Q 78.03 (shimmer fixed)
at_c17_12...................61....................58...........................58
at_canals_08...............93....................76...........................76
at_prison_05...............97....................96...........................96

I thought some HL2 would be good because people noticed this a lot in CSS. (which I don't have) Anyway, it's pretty clear at HL2 there is no mythical 30% performance reduction.

I'll believe it when I hear it from a reputable source and it's been tested & verified. Thanks.

Well, we all know you don't like me and nVidia Morph, but nonetheless some people would regard this as "news" as:
A. It concerns some people
B. It's the first time this is posted on the net AFAIK
C. Most people here know I get something early every now and again
D. Like me or not, I think most would agree I don't lie.

Anyway, suit yourself, this will be all over the net soon enough I imagine. The only reason I'm posting is my buddy said I could. (apparently nVidia shares your concerns in this issue and wants you to know a fix is forthcoming)

Like I said, I'll post my experiences later! ;)

People have also said that it happens on the NV40, persionally i have never noticed it on my 6800U, still, this is great news IF it is true. I'd like to see what the results of this are, and if it fixes the problems that some people (who i think are waaaaaaaaaaay to anal about this) say make games "unplayable".

Experiences thus far:

UT2004: Torlan level, 16X12 all on highest, 4X MS TAA 8X AF High Quality. Can not find the shimmer anymore. I used to be able to see it in places in this level, now I can't.

BF2: Couldn't find the shimmer, did find some weird grass switching color in one area, in general looked fine running through the grass. I don't have this game patched, don't have much experience at anything but dieing in it, will look into it more.
I do know I could find the shimmer effect on the ground in some places, and that seems to be gone.

So, thus far I'd call the new drivers a success, as I couldn't find the shimmer in two places I had previously.

I'll look into it more as I play, I'm sure there will be web reviews of this soon.

Certainly good news for G70s owners. Thanks for the testing .

any inside knowledge as to whether this solves the 6600GT shimmering? (same deal as G70 more or less)

if you'd like, I would happily test them for you on mine :)

I have a 6600GT SLI set and a 6800GT SLI set, but thanks anyway.

:)

I don't understand the question?

I believe he's referring to nVidia releasing new drivers that are optimized for dual-core systems.

Interesting. I'd also like to see the fps hit, and I'd also like to see some of the bigger websites (like this one) post follow up benchmarks and compare them to older ones to see how much of a performance boost the "bug" actually gave, and if nvidia planned this to give the 7800GTX a performance boost at launch.

Good fix for nV..but didn't you say you couldn't see them anyway BEFORE the patch?:p

Can you tell us the version number of the driver? I'm currently running a beta set (78.01) I got from guru3d that doesn't fix the issue. They do seem to fix the issue with the default profile over riding the app profiles. However, I'd love to know which ones fix the AF shimmering though.

No, he said it was barley noticeable before. Thats a big difference between not being able to be seen

Very nice of your friend. Very cool that NV seems to be hearing their customers and acting on it.

As for the question above, I believe the 80 series drivers, when they are done, are said to have optimizations for dual core cpu rigs offering slightly better ( no definition for better at this time ) performance. That is all I know and have no other info.
