Shift workers: Do you do short changes?

Nah I have a really short commute now. Less than 10 minutes...half of it highway.

It doesn't really bother me, but all of us on the airport are playing poker tonight...so no sleep for me!

Lemme ask you this...

If you're scheduled to start work @ 7:54am... when do you arrive to work?

I ask because a friend of mine got "in trouble" at work because he refused to show up an hour before his scheduled start time... to provide "relief" for the person on the previous shift.

Apparently there is an unwritten rule at the plant that you show up early so that the person ahead of you can shower/change before punching out and leaving for the day.

I did a shift for a little while where I was on for 12 hrs then off for 24 hrs. That was pretty cool.

7 pm - 7 am = work
7 am - 7 am = off
7 am - 7 pm = work

It feels like you get every other day off, but the hours work out to 56 hrs per week.

Yeah I'm ATC. Well, Flight Service. Its like a control tower, but I don't control, advisory only...I do other stuff instead like Weather Observation and NOTAMs...

We all work like this though...FSS & ATC. At some centres they work 10 on 1 off.

Canada is probably the worst country in the world for successfully training ATC and FSS. Our check out rates are abysmal...so we're always chronically understaffed.

With shift changes like that I can see why people don't want to stay. My schedule is 12's and can be either a 9a-9p, 7a-7p, 11a-11p or 7p-7a. You occasionally lose a day to sleep when changing shifts. I usually wait for some incentive when they need a short notice change.

My normal shift is 0630 - 1700 M - Th, with Fri/Sat/Sun off
When we go to shift change my shift is 0600 - 1800 Su - Sa, no days off
Not too much difference except for the days off.

I work 4 days one week, and 3 days the next week for 12 hours each working day. All other days I get off. I don't know if I really like it over a traditional 8-5 M-F yet.

I do 7p-7a the same 3 days a week, every week. Its like I get almost 5 days off in between shifts. I never want to go back to M-F 8-5
