Shift lock problem with car.

The shift level on my mom's car is locked. There is a shift-lock hole beside it, and when I press it, I can move the lever fine, but when I put it back in the P position, it once again locks up and I can't mov it unless I press the shift-lock once more.

Can this be fixed easily?

Its either the brake switch (i.e. the pedal brake has to be detected as pressed as part of the mechanism that releases the shift lock) or the shift-lock solenoid. Both should be easy to test/fix...

Car make/year/model would help.

Electronic brake pedal safety switch isn't registering. The shift lock button by-passes the brake interlock and allows the shifter to be moved out of park without the brake pedal depressed.

Year, make, and model would be helpful.

Its a 95 Hyundai Sonata.

Yes TL, I have to press the shiftlock button to get it to move, when I press the brake the lock isn't released.

So I suppose my mom just has to take it to shop and get them to fix the brake sensor/swtich?

ooh, at least yours has a way to over-ride the shift lock. I own an '00 VW bug, and it got stuck in park way too many times.. once it was stuck in my friend's driveway for 3 days.. it just wouldn't get out of park... turns out there was a recall on the things for a little switch that causes that. it had the same "safety" feature in neutral, but I never put it in neutral before I had it fixed, just in case that happened 🙂

there were also 2 other recalls that the dealer didn't tell us about until something went wrong - the windows falling down into the doors, and something else I can't remember.. I've had so many problems with this car, I just can't reccomend it. Its all style, little functionality.
