SHIFT lanes... or NOT

Yahoo News link

So what happens when you come around the corner and there's a landslide or a deer in the road, or the mattress strapped the SUV in front of you comes flying off, etc?

While Subaru has ads touting the ability of their cars to successfully navigate around these hazards, Nissan thinks it would be better to make the car STEER ITSELF INTO THEM.

bravo!

lol you just have to use the turn signal to turn it off.. thats pretty funny.

and besides, crashing into mattresses is fun. they are soft and cozy.

I saw that and was too lazy to make the topic. I correctly judged someone would have the same reaction to this as I do.

Seriously. I'll steer for myself Nissan, thank you very much.

Not sure how they'll implement it, but the sooner we take driving out of the hands of people and put it in the hands of computers the better off we'll all be, and no I'm not kidding. It will drastically reduce accidents, emisions, and travel time.

Yeah but if your car is controlled by a computer, how will you outrun the po po?

We don't need computers to drive for us. We just need people who ACTUALLY know how to drive. Driver training/education in most countries is pretty pathetic. They'll hand a license out to almost anyone who can put their foot on a pedal and twirl the wheel around a bit.

The things I've seen some people do on the road really frighten me.

And as for the self correcting Nissan.. WTF? Whats next, a car that brakes when you press the accelerator?

It will also increase the government's control on the citizens of this country. What will you do in the future when they outlaw cars with steering wheels?

For reference, read Danel Keyes Moran's The Long Run, and another book in the same series, The Last Dancer.

...wow this makes me think of that Airbus autopilot system that would override pilot commands. Resulted in several crashes.

Seems fine to me, if it only does it when your wheel is slightly angled, and ignores sharp turns. Idea: Make it only engage on highways where you have not made a shapr turn in over 3 miles. I think it would help a lot with people falling asleep at the wheel, drunk driving, etc...

I think a better system would be a beeper/warning alert that detects when you are drifting out of your lane. It also would be deactivated by the turn signal and/or the brake pedal.

they already offer that on their Infiniti vehicles. It's called "Lane Departure Warning".

I think teh system they are talking about in the Yahoo! link is more for stabilizing the car in a high-speed sudden direction change, like a lane-change. It will help stabilize the car rather than let it lose control (which might occur in large vehicles like trucks, SUVs, minivans, etc....).

Plus its great marketing. The more acroynms you have, the more cars you can sell.

They will have to pry the steering wheel from my cold, dead hands.
