Shift Differential pay

How common is it for employeers to pay a Shift Differential to employees working crappy over night hours?

I work in the support department for a web hosting company that's open 24/7. We have 9 shifts that rotate every 4 weeks or so. 4 of these shifs are working crappy hours like Thrusday - Friday 4p - 3a. or worse. Monday - Saturday 8p - 5a(an entire month my life is put on hold. Not to mention the other 2 shift that put life on hold) Personally I think those that get stuck on those shifts should get a little more than those working a nice 7a - 4p or 12p - 9p Monday - Friday. Those shifts actually allow someone to have a life.


What say the "hive mind"?

How much more is it compared to working 7a -7p?

When I worked in a place that was open 24/7, I think the 2nd shifters got like a 5% bonus and the 3rd shifters got 10% or something. Plus they got paid for their 30 minute lunch.

I work 4:30pm - 12:30am, I am on salary but I get 12% added to it for the differential.

Guess it's time to start looking for something else. This isn't the only gripe I have with my current job, it's just more weight on the camels back.

I get 15% here. Also, every minute after 8 hours is another 15% tacked on. But to answer the question, I have no idea how common it is. I had never heard of it before I got this job.

yea, pretty much everyone i know who has 24/7 shift jobs (friends in both IT and Medical fields) get paid differently. I only know about one job where I don't think they get paid differently during the shifts, it's keeping tabs (monitoring) on the space station.

Other than gas stations/mini-marts, I didn't know ANYONE worked the 2nd/3rd shifts without getting shift differential...Our union contract pays about 15% more for 2nd shift, 25% for 3rd shift, PLUS, 2nd shift gets paid 8 for 7.5, and 3rd shift gets paid 8 for 7.5 AND gets paid for lunch.

$16 flat for a shift past 10pm

we only work full shifts of 8 hrs.

In my area in the grocery business, night workers get 75 cents more an hour if they're more recent hires. Those who have been around for ages are on an older union contract and they get 25% shift differential. Not uncommon to find guys making $20 an hour to stock shelves.

I work 2 to 11, and I get a 10 % differential. People Working 3rd shift get a 15% differential.

2nd shift at my last job got 5% differential. not sure what 3rd shift got.

At Wal-Mart, 3rd shift gets an extra $1 per hour. That might equate to an extra 12% for a new hire and only 7% differential if you've been working there for 6 years and are making $13/hr.

In manufacturing it is VERY common
