Shift 2: Unleashed

Anybody pick this game up today? I said I wouldn't get it after I hated Shift 1, but with a really good pre-order deal through Gamestop I ended up getting it just for the hell of it.

I think its a pretty large upgrade from Shift 1. Doesn't quite have the bright, clean polish that Forza does, but then again its not nearly as sterile in the in-game presentation either. The car customization is nearly on par, although I haven't bothered with the tuning.

What do you guys think? It doesn't seem like it'll suplant Forza 3(I keep talking XBox lingo, as thats all I know/care about) as the king of car collecting games/simish racers on consoles, but its not terrible. That Autolog thing is just the cat's ass too, the new standard in timing and stat tracking I would say. Wish I had more friends that played though!

I like it! I wish the physics were more Forza3-ish though. The cars slide too easy and none feel like they have any grip. Even after a full suspension and tires. Once I adjust, I probably won't notice it so much though

I got mine yesterday but didn't have a chance to play it. Hopefully some tonight.. but I may just wait til the weekend so I can best utilize that double-exp for 24hrs thing.

Ya, I was gonna say, they feel kind slidey. Too easy to get all sideways even with minor adjustments.
The head thing is kinda wonky too, too distracting, I prefer the good ol hood view.
But really, its a pretty cool game. Will probably go home and play for a couple hours again tonight!

I read several user comments that it is Shift 1.1. Same poor physics (sliding everywhere) and same graphics. I'm not sure why EA likes pumping out sequels that don't bother expanding or upgrading the original.

Shift 1 was junk IMO, horrible driving model.

They are trying to be like Activision. I will wait to pass judgment until my copy gets in.

Oh man.. its gonna take me a while to adjust from bumper cam on GT5 to helmet cam. Helmet cam seems the most fun. I ought to get the PC version and run a 3-monitor setup..

I just played this a little bit last night. I was a little confused when after my first real race the tutorial guy took me to the garage to upgrade my car... then after some upgrades my car was not eligible for any of the first set of races. WTF? Do all races have this car performance cap or is it just the first set? If they all do, I'm going to be selling this game...

I actually prefer the performance cap.. keeps you from using a Porsche to beat up on a bunch of Civics..

To me, the point to upgrading your car is to try to have an edge over the competition. If you can't upgrade, then that's not fun for me. In Shift 1, if you upgraded your car, the competition also got the upgrade so that was kind of annoying, but more acceptable to me than not allowing upgrades. This ruins the replayability for me since I can't take a brand new car and go replay some of the older races to try to beat my best lap times with other cars.

So you're saying this performance cap exists for all races?

If there is a cap on all races, they are just trying to keep that intensity in the races. In Forza I would lap cars because how much better my car was compared to the AI.

Each level is capped to the level of car. So early on, a D level car can be between 500 and 1000 or whatever. It's exactly like Forza.
You can upgrade the car, but you can't buy every expensive part and load it on. Just enough that it still stays in D class. That still makes it too easy though, just like Forza. Oh well.

yes.. there are classes in this game just like Forza..
you can upgrade to the very top of the class though..
thwe problem is you added too much and jumped into the C class.

the classes span a very large numerical set..
so D is like 200-400 so you can upgrade the car all the way to D400 and not be a C..

So yes you can have a very nice advantage over similar cars if you tune the the highest class level for that race.

It's exactly like the PI number in Forza 2 and 3

So I gave this game another shot yesterday, and I walked away with zero interest in ever playing it again. I did 3 races and placed in the top 2 every time, and when it came time to do the 4th race, I realized I had no desire to drive the exact same car as I did the previous 3 races. I think the performance cap system is good for keeping things balanced, however, for me it is absolute rubbish. I should be able to upgrade my car as I like, and if they are worried about you having an unfair advantage the competition should get some upgrades too.

I like it when I can play a racing game like an RPG and upgrade my car with my money after every race. It's called progression. I have no desire to race the exact same car several races in a row with cash burning a hole in my virtual pocket. Such a shame because I absolutely loved Shift 1.

Well the point is, you can't take a car into a race if it's more powerful than the league/license permits.

It almost sounds like you want to take a Class C or Class B rated car into a Class D race, or want to drive a beast in an amateur race.

Does that sound right? Can you do that in any other game that has something resembling leagues/licenses?

Doesn't sound like racing to me. The whole point of racing is clear boundaries concerning performance for a given race/league.

I'm not arguing against the idea that there are any imperfections in Shift 2. Believe me, I wouldn't dare argue something hilarious like that. Shift 2, like Shift, is filled with bugs and problems.
But I'm playing on the PC, where I'm permitted to mod the hell out of this game. 😀 Thankfully, the community (while struggling with a few roadblocks for massive overhaul modifications) is putting out some worthwhile minimods that completely change the character of this game. On my end, with these minimods, and my G25, it feels like a quality console-level sim, but with a lot more attitude and a genre-leading sense of speed. Does it compare to the simulation offered in iRacing? Hell no, but it's close enough to "simulation" like the Forzas and GTs that I can definitely enjoy this until I complete the career. Not sure if I'll ever bother to play online, since with the mods that cause a realistic loss of traction, racers running the game on stock will have an advantage.

So I finally got my copy from gamefly last night, and it kept telling me it could not connect to the autolog feature. After that, it would just sit at the title screen trying to contact the servers. Does anyone know what I can do to get past the title screen to actually play?
