by all means if the vehicle has an O/D on off switch use it when you need it, thats why they made it.
That is different than going from D to L, D to L could be one or two gear drops, even 3 depending on the transmission.
With O/D its a smaller drop than a full numeric gear, alot of auto manufatures even recommend not driving in O/D in the stop and go/city traffic because of extra heat buildup.
