Sherwood RD-7108 6.1 Dolby Digital Receiver $99

Seems like a good deal. Wonder how well this would pair up with the Fluance home theater system speakers like the AV-HTBs...

I have just ordered a 6015, which is 33$ cheaper. Any difference in sound quality between the two?
(I do'nt need a 7th channel anyway, and there's no real benifit in sound quality for games and such by switching to 7.1).

where did you find a 6015 for $66? the cheapest i saw was $77

Sherwood is a good brand. They are one of the classic "old-time" brands, like Acoustic Research and Scott. They are more recently known for offering well-built entry level audio. A few years back, they were the first to offer digital Dolby Pro decoding at a decent price. They were also the first to have Dolby Digital at under $300. Both the 5 and 6-channel models here are great bargains.

"6-channel direct input " - this means you can connect the analog outs from a PC soundcard to get surround sound game audio (which doesn't work for digital outs - you just get stereo).

It looks like it might only have composite video switching (not s-video or component) but if your TV has enough S-video or you're using a PC monitor that's not a problem.

A nice step up would be a manufacturer refurb Onkyo TX-SR502B for $149 from jandr.com -- a bit better sound quality and s-video switching.

is that true? you don't get the other channels if you run the digital output from the motherboard or soundcard and let the receiver do the D/A?

I believe the only way to get 5.1 audio from the digital outs is to have a motherboard with an nforce chipset and the Soundstorm Doldy Digital Encoding.
